Everyone should test their breakaway switch. It is very easy. Attached is what Escape has in the Owner's Manual for testing. When I have tested ours it has worked fine with all wheels locked up.

The breakaway cable should go to a permanent part of the tow vehicle. Nothing that can break or become disconnected. This is what Escape's own manual says too. Whether it is short enough to engage...
