Beautiful, probably the only place in the US that is not impacted by the weather.

W Shearer Heard COE West Point GA
Here at a beautiful camground at West Point GA. Our loop is high above the water a bit steep drive but once in we have a deck and stairway down to a fire pit with built in bench. We have lake view from back window and lake facing side

How are the restrooms? Last fall my wife and I had a come to Jesus meeting with the site director over general maintenance. I mean when a camping eagle scout has to
carve a handle for a faucet that hasn’t had one in over a year, something is lacking.
I’m eager to know and deciding if I’ll go back.

Dave I think you’re referring to the Defeated Creek site but let me tell you about the pitiful restroom and shower facilities here at Heard COE not like the usual COE. One men’s building for 41 sites with one toilet and one urinal. Shower building men’s side to serve 63 sites with one toilet and two showers. Toilet there was plugged this morning. Otherwise a beautiful park.

I've encountered a fair number of COE campgrounds that have trashed bathrooms.

It’s strange, some are immaculate, others in a steadily declining state and others bad and not getting better. There are a lot of variables with contract maintenance, budget cuts, upper level guidance and prioritizatuon etc. We feel fortunate in the Rock Island district to have pretty darn good maintenace on our Corps facilities. Traveling and randomly picking a Corps facility is kind of like when I play pool. Poke and hope.

Fire Permit
Have camped a lot on BLM over the last five years and knew I had to have a shovel and a bucket. A couple of weeks ago I camped at Alabama Hills and also did so in January when they had sites posted no campfires or charcoal bbq's. So I called this time and was told I needed a Fire Permit. Could go into any ranger station or Visitor Center or online. Went into the Bishop Ranger Station and the guy there was a trip(sounds just like his outgoing VM message). Anyways we fill out the form and he then proceeds to ask me some questions such as what gear do I need. Here's what he said:
1. Shovel
2. Five gallons of water in jug(s) next to campfire
3. Stir the fire/coals while extinguishing
4. Needs to be cool enough to touch
So while I had a vague idea- and never would violate posted orders of prohibition- this made very clear what is legally required.

14 days at a time.
Starting this year, the BLM has designated some’official’ camping sites. Prior to that you could camp most anywhere.
Each year more and more people camping leads to more and more restrictions because of the bad behavior of the few.
Here is a photo of a map with the current rules.
Enjoy your travels.

Looks great. Have I missed previous write-ups about your travels in that area. If not, how about doing a bit of a write-up on traveling in that part of Mexico. Who knows, I might want to venture further than Baja.
