As far as I am aware, the coupler is non-adjustable; but you do have to make sure that the size of your hitch ball is compatible with the coupler. Would also help to make sure the coupler mechanism...

Your experience is similar to my own. I usually put the tow into drive and move forward an inch or so before hooking or detaching the coupler (jerking forward is best). Makes the whole process work...
