I'm ditching the 2" plywood backed version and getting some new 4" split. Bottom cushion is already split. I'll lose 2" of bench depth across the U portion, but well worth the access ease...

E19 U shapped dinette back cushion?

My 2" standard / non-split U portion back cushion has a plywood back. Does getting the 4" (and split) back cushion do away with the plywood back?

I'm guessing the plywood is needed to retain...
