Thank you for explaining how full your cup is. I agree with your assessment. Putting water in the cup is not a necessary part of keeping your refrigerator cold.

If you run the refer for a day to cool it down...

If you run the refer for a day to cool it down before a trip won't the condensation off the fins put water in the cup and create the dam?
