Looking back on the posts from the beginning I see that pre 2016 the opening was a larger rectangle and the typical handheld shower was provided and fit into the box.

I was about to ask the same question. I'd rather have a regular handheld shower head than a garden nozzle.

I can make an adapter but if I can buy one then I will.
