Your sailor side is showing through with the teak, but it certainly is a great wood. One of my favourites is cherry, as when it develops it's patina it darkens...

While others love the stark white look (heck two of our best friends do), to me it appears way too institutional and cold. Even with adding a bit of your own colour, it just would not work for me....

Pretty much any plywood is more stable than real wood. The thin plastic (not sure what it really is) surface on the luaun put is likely somewhat waterproof. Luaun is also quite light.
