Thank you Brian for your informative and well researched post! It sounds from what you report, we would be okay with the Cherokee Sport, but should probably get the Andersen Hitch for Added stability...

It was the salesman on the lot who gave us the 5,200 lb. towing figure (ahem), and yes, on checking, the brochure we brought home gives a different, and lower, tow rating.

Jeep Cherokee Sport w tow package

We currently have a Subaru Forester, love it, and would like something similar but that can also tow our on order 19' Escape, which the Forester cannot. The Sport has a tow rating of 5200 pounds...
