The kids shouldn't be back of the tow and near the hitch anyway.
They should be sitting on your lap and helping you steer or at the very least, standing on the back seat and advising you, while...

Mine are fine after three years, but I've not been involved in sword play.

I'd keep them locked in the glove box when not in use, if I was you.
