Without the cover, it would be a real pain in the butt having no place to stack dirty and clean dishes. The counter extension would be to the left...

The overall counter is 22 3/4" deep, 40 5/8" long. The counter extension is 18 1/8" deep and 11 1/8" wide. It lines up with the front of the counter.
