F150 factory installed backup camera
We have ordered a Ford F150, which comes with a backup camera. I believe the camera is mounted in the tailgate, which will be of no help in hooking up to our Escape 5.0TA. Does anyone know if it’s possible to add a camera to the Ford system to help lining up a 5th-wheel connection?

Can't the 5th-wheel hook up be seen through the back window?

You can really see the hitch with our Frontier. We plan to use the Andersen Ultimate in the F150 and with that there will be a depth issue to consider.

I would imagine it depends on what kind of cab the truck has and how tall in the seat one sits. I'm 5'7" , the truck is an extended cab (which means my head is more than 3' from the back window)... I can barely see the tailgate and can't see any of the 5th wheel hitch when I hook up.
The tailgate camera is nice, but does nothing for me when hooking up Ten Forward... sure wish it was located on the top/back of the cab!

2.7 Ecoboost with max payload (2,100lbs), Supercab, 2wd.
Copied you and got in white to match the Escape.

Getting the Supercab, not sure of distance to rear window, but probably similar to our current Frontier Crewcab. Rosemary is 5'3".

I've seen where people use multiple camera location. Hopefully the Ford camera will allow that.

Which white?
Some whites are blue and some are yellow. To my eyes, a blue/white truck doesn't match the Dover White of Escape gelcoat.

My F-150 is Glacier White and it certainly doesn't match the trailer body. But it does the wheels of the trailer and I'm good with it.

The new Ford Super Duty offers up to 7 cameras including a center high-mounted stop lamp camera for connecting 5th wheel and gooseneck hitches and a connection for a camera mounted on the back of a trailer. Hopefully this technology will be included on the F-150 models one day.

True. Mine is Platinum White Metallic, and doesn't match the trailer. But, I don't care if it matches or not.

There are systems where you can tie into existing displays for more camera views. These are a bit pricey, and require removing part of your dash to access connections. I am thinking of just getting a WiFi camera that sends a signal to my phone, and setting it up in the box for hitching.

I used this on my 19' and will use it on my 5.0 if needed. Works pretty well.

This is one I am considering hitching up to my 5.0. Gotta come up with a method of getting a magnet to stick to aluminum though.

The idea of having a camera to see 5th wheel hookup is great but doubt it will ever be offered in an F150 since the majority of 5th wheel trailers require bigger than a half ton truck. That being said it would be nice to have. I could see the top of hitch in our 2010 F150 but with the new one, with a tri-fold tonneau cover the folded up cover is in the way so I used the tape trick to line up. Still finding it much harder though than actually seeing the hitch.

No doubt you are right, Adrian. The Super Duty's are meant to be towing machines, thus get the towing bells and whistles. Most 150s are used for passenger vehicles with moderate work use. With my quad fold tonneau it is impossible to see the hitch, and even without the tonneau, I don't think you would see it anyway.

Think backwards
What about putting the camera on the trailer and watching the truck approach instead of the other way around?

That would likely work, maybe mounted on the underside of the pin box, though everything would be backwards from normal as far as turning direction.

Maybe it could be set up to use a mirror image....

How about adapting the suction cup base of a dash/windshield cell phone holder? Could use on rear glass or rooftop maybe.
