Dempster Extreme Make-over

Here's me and my Escape after several hundred km's on the Dempster. We got rattled and painted. It took $12 at a car wash to clean the truck and trailer combo. Serious fun.

Re: Dempster Extreme Make-over

Great shot, unlike the pretty pictures that we are use to seeing, this is a trailer that is getting used!

Re: Dempster Extreme Make-over

Wow! That is some dirt indeed Dirk! I'm surprised it only cost $12 at the car wash. Hope there was no real damage besides the new brown coat? And it certainly does look like duct tape on that Maxxair cover! Did that just rattle loose on this trip? If so, I hope nothing else did. Hope you really had serious fun. Great photo indeed.

Re: Dempster Extreme Make-over

keen eyes everyone - yup, that is duct tape on the vent cover - the road up to the Nahanni (past Ft. Liard) was the one that rattled it off. T-Rex duct tape did the job - held it on for a subsequent 6,000 km (some of it with really high winds).

The only other real damage was the flip up counter extension beside the sink - it fell off. The road was a tad bouncy - tore the screws right out of the wood. Shoe-goo and more duct tape did the trick (it's still attached). Other than that, the trailer worked incredibly on the aweful roads. All systems work fine despite the punishment (I'm in Quesnel right now, enjoying the furnace).

I attached another photo - dirty detail of the rear window - note the small bit of snow attached. View wasn't so good that night.

Quesnel, just an hour from the Bowron Lake Circuit. About the most beautiful place I've ever canoed.

Re: Dempster Extreme Make-over

fear not Escape Artist - that's hopefully as dirty as it will get.

Jim - I head out for a solo circuit of the Bowron chain tomorrow. Hopefully the rain stops today (it's supposed to be sunny for the rest of the week). I'm hoping to do it in 4 days, I have 5 if necessary.

Re: Dempster Extreme Make-over

I am jealous Dirk. I have not been on the circuit since February, with intentions of heading back this winter as well. We never fully made it around the circuit on skis. I last did it by canoe 2 years ago this September. We took 8 days with a 1 day layover, and averaged close to 4 hours a day paddle time. If at all possible, I would recommend taking as much time as you can afford. It offers lots of great photo opportunities. Usually September is fairly dry, but we had rain on 7 out of the 8 days, sometimes most of the day, but most often intermittent. Rain really does not bother us, we know quite well how to keep everything but the outside of stuff dry.

Re: Dempster Extreme Make-over

oooh - I would love to have 8 days to do it, but alas, I must return to work at some point. I'm also going solo, so there won't be much to do besides paddle (and, of course, take photos).

How do you ski it? Do you pull a sled or carry your gear?

Re: Dempster Extreme Make-over

We pulled pulks, it is much easier. It takes just as much physical strength to pull as it does to carry, but it is WAY easier on the body. We had deep, soft, warm snow which was terrible for pulling, but if it is wind-blown and packed, you can fly.

Underside?

I've been on the Dempster, without a trailer. It's one long, rough road, hard on tires and on vehicles.

How did the underside of the ET hold up?

That original thread is almost nine years old. Don’t hold your breath if your query goes unanswered.
