2016 Mississippi River Rendezvous Sept 30-Oct 2

The Mississippi River continues to be the backdrop for another year of fiberglass comradery. For 2016, the rally moves up river to the sleepy community of Thomson, IL and another fine US Army Corp of Engineers campground called Thomson Causeway.

The festivities begin on Friday September 30, 2016. The booking window for campsites opens on March 30, 2016. We will be using sites 99-126, but three additional loops are available, two of those are within walking distance.

We hope you can add the dates to your calendar and plan to attend this year’s event.

Iowa Dave sent me a report this week about conditions at Thomson Causeway, site of this years Mississippi River Rendezvous. Dave said all the roads had been plowed of snow and there was plenty of activity with backwater ice fisherman. What Dave failed to mention was that he was not camping, I just checked and temperature on the ground was -5 F or -21 C.

We had a nice drive over to Thompson on Thursday afternoon. We picked up several brochures in Fulton which is a happening little river town about eight miles south of the campground. The last weekend in September is their fall festival weekend. This little town seemed to have at least one of everything so groceries, hardware, gasoline, tattoos etc. will not be a problem. Firewood is available at the campground. Whether it's in town activities, nature hikes, or just watching the big Miss roll along while looking at shorebirds, Thompson Corps of Engineers campground looks like a good place to be the last week in September. US highway 30 from Cedar Rapids to Muscatine is in good shape if you're coming in on I-80 and want to drive 80 miles of relatively flat two lane that follows the famous Lincoln Highway right into Fulton.

Thanks for the report Dave. Good to know anyone wanting a tattoo matching their Escape can have it taken care of at the rally.

For those who enjoy hiking, there is a very nice and little-known nature area just a few miles east of Thompson called French Bluff-- lots of striking views and good bird watching.

French Bluffs

There is also a very nice overlook of the whole valley atop a bluff at Mississippi Pallisades State Park, just a few miles north on 84 in Savanna. All but the last few feet are accessible by car, for those who cherish the view but not the hike.

I live about ten miles from Thompson if anyone has questions about restaurants or activities in the area.

Yeah, I can understand getting married and maybe even having kids, but a tattoo is so permanent.

Yup, they last as long as a fiberglass camper.

Speaking of tattoos. just north of Thomson is the city of Savanna IL. Famous in Savanna is the local biker bar called Poopy's. The website for the bar advertises a tattoo parlor. For those wishing to be more discrete they also offer piercings.

We're waiting for the booking date too. This year the old shop teacher Eric Thompson (thoer) will pit his nut torque down skills against Iowa (big guns) Dave and all other comers. We're still working on the format but this contest is guaranteed to last less time than it would take you to read all the nut torque responses on the forum. There will be a prize and a modest liquid entry fee. Paul, it's the Recreation ( Pofessional) ? In me, I couldn't help it.

I may have to twist an arm or two, back in the Parson's era I was pretty good at it. But my mind does write checks my body can not cash.

We are also waiting to book our campsite. But where are people thinking they want to be? I looked at the campground map. There is a loop on the east side of the river (sites 79-98), and then several loops on the island. I am thinking the sites from 29 to 53 might be nice, or the two loops north of the boat launch (sites 54 - 78). But I have never been to the campground. What sites are others looking at?

In post #1 Paul mentioned sites 99-126. They are all flat and pretty nice and equipped the same. The Army does operate this campground after all.

Just booked site 118 for Thursday to Sunday. I tried for 114 but someone beat me to it! Still think I get a river view though. Looking forward to seeing everyone again.
