Lindy has a
Brompton which she loves. Only 16" wheels, but people have gone on long tours with them. I have a
Tern Eclipse which has 24" wheels, a generator in the front hub, and a nice rack. It is not as compact as the Brompton, but it goes over rough roads better.
When friends ask me about buying a bike, I tell them to think about the bike shop they want to have a relationship with, and buy the bike from that shop. If the shop will do a good job of building the bike, work with you to make sure the bike fits you, etc. then you will probably be happy with the bike and hopefully ride it more.
I urge folks to stay away from bikes purchased at Target or Walmart. One of the things I do is volunteer at an organization that fixes up donated bikes and gives them away at Christmas time. (free bikes 4 kids). The department store bikes are really difficult to get adjusted, and often have very low quality bearings etc. And they are usually assembled by people who a very low aptitude for bicycle mechanics.
