Coming Astronomical Events

All those astronomical events that happen outside and above our Escapes while we're camping seem to occur a day before I'm aware of them, so this thread is hopefully a recurring location for those of you in the know to remedy that. Thanks in advance.

Nov. 17, the Leonid meteor shower peaks the night of Nov. 17-18, 2018. Look to the east.

Don,

Where we live (Tehachapi mountains at 5,600 ft. elevation), we usually have a good view of celestial events, as well as the International Space Station and even the occasional nighttime rocket launch from Vandenberg AFB!

For those visiting in Florida, launches from Cape Canaveral (https://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/launches-and-events)
are visible (day or night) from as far away as Tampa. The latter part of night launches from a distance are actually more impressive than from closer up.

If you're close to the southern Delmarva Peninsula, NASA sometimes launches rockets from Wallops Island, VA (http://www.chincoteague.com/launches.html) I was able to actually view one night launch all the way from College Park, MD!

too much moon this year for the leonids, but next month, dec 13-14 will be the Geminids, and the moon will be setting by midnight, so around 2am, it should be good. IF its clear, hah!

i'm the VP of the Santa Cruz Astronomy Club, heh.

Did you tell him he's looking the wrong direction?

Actually, Josie wasn't looking at the eclipse so much as she was listening to it.

Now we're talking. Thanks, John.

(Edit: should be clear for us; because it doesn't rain in So.Cal., and Woolsey fire is 90% contained.)

(We're still praying for the folks and firefighters up north (Camp Fire 55% contained, 148000 acres))
