But remember that most of these folks picking up their trailers don't live near the border and will never have crossed it let alone 100s of times. Picking up their new trailer is a stressful enough event without complicating it by worrying what you can and cannot take going north and then coming back into the United States. Keep it simple.

Nancy (the OP) didn't say anything about reentering Canada with food or prohibited items. She just wanted to know about the fridge cooling time as far as I can tell.
Nancy, we shopped for some things in Bellingham on our way back south after pickup. The fridge had been turned on prior to the delivery in Sumas. It wasn't a problem.

From the original post: "Is it difficult or wise to bring a cooler full of food through customs?"
I took that to mean the first time entering Canada or heading back south into the US.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I take that to mean, in order to stock the fridge on the Sumas side after delivery. I'd say no need, we just shopped afterwards. But that's a personal preference thing.

What I meant was what food could we bring from home and cross into Canada with? After we get our trailer we do want to cross back over again into Canada. Sounds like that's the best time to go grocery shopping and stocking up on food for a weeks worth of camping is once we get back in to Canada. And turning on the fridge as early as possible seems like A good idea to get the refrigerator called ahead of time.

It's not just crossing the Canada USA border that is an issue. There are also highway checks on the highways when crossing into California from OR. They are interested in what fruits you are bringing across. We had California Clementines that we bought in Washington and the agent let us keep them as we only had a couple but she warned us about proper disposal of the peels.

They already know some things about you. Play them straight and do not try to explain your justification for hauling what you have. They will make their decision. Don't try to haul potatoes or other things with dirt on them into the US. There are good grocery stores in Sumas, Chilliwack, Osoyoos, I did not stop close to the border coming into the US from Osoyoos, I bought groceries later in the day. 6 pack of pop, a little water and some nutty bars and Jake and I can go a lotta miles.

Oh my gosh! I hate to think how much wind resistance they get from the big signs on top! Not mention all the delays routing around bridges and overpasses!
