Yamaha's new portable generator EF2200iS
I just found out about the Yamaha's new EF2200iS generator and it's listed as a new model on Yamaha's own website and my google search found no vendor of it yet. On Yamaha's site it's having a special preorder of $989.10 and promises February delivery. It added a couple of features and improvements that are not on its 2400iS model and look like they are improvements over Honda's EU2200i as well. I would like to pre order one and want to hear your comments on the pro's and con's of the EU2200iS compared to its competitors out there. Only potential issue I see now may be for return or exchange since it's not from big box chains like Home Depot or Lowes etc.

When I was still working , the electrical contractor I worked for had numerous portable generators . Yamaha’s were the best of the lot , very dependable and far better than Honda’s
Honda’s were terrible in cold weather

When I was still working a pyrotechnics contractor had set up on the Veterans Memeorial
Plaza for the City Christmas tree lighting. Once the tree was turned on, the fireworks started and then the holiday parade followed. The fireworks were electronically timed and fired. I had a Honda 2000 generator on site for the PA for the lighting. It was 10 degrees and the generator started and ran fine. The generator the pyrotechnician had would not start. We quickly carried the 2000 I had across the plaza, restarted it and as the mayor said “saved the day”. I don’t know what generator they had but I sure was happy with our generator that day. Honda engines have never let me down. That said, I’ve never had a Yamaha or other generator. I know of a little 1300 watt Honda unit that has served faithfully since 1985.

So Yamaha now has a EF2000iS, an EF2200iS, and a EF2400iS, rated at 1600, 1800, and 2000w respectively. The specs on the Yamaha page show the db levels of 51.5-61, 57-67, and 53-60 (1/4 load - rated load), making the 2200 the noisiest, not what I would expect.

Really have enjoyed using our Honda EU2000i. Has never given us a problem. I would buy a EU2200 in a heartbeat. I don’t have any experience with the Yamahas.
I did come across a strange disclaimer about using the Yamaha EF2000iS with the Progressive Industries EMS-HW30C which is what comes in the Escapes if the “surge protector” is opted for. Not sure if this would still be the case with the EF2200iS. I suppose you could just put it in to bypass at the expense of the protection it provides. Might not be a big deal but no one has been able to tell me if a generator running out of fuel produces a low voltage...which I don’t think my mini-split A/C would like.

Jake, In my opinion, one advantage the Honda has always had over Yahama is a positive pressure fuel pump - meaning you can connect the Honda to an external fuel tank for longer run times (photo below "borrowed" from the web). Do you know if the new Yamaha is designed to allow for an external fuel source? Unless I missed it, I didn't hear anything about that in the video you linked.

Interesting, I have the Yamaha EF2000iS for about 7 years. Used it a few times when I had the Jayco Class C motorhome. Ran it for 18 hours one winter during a ice storm. Very reliable so far operating hot or cold. I normally top up the fuel when it gets down to 1/4 tank. Will let it run low on fuel and measure the electrical output next time

There had to be a reason those folks chose one over the other. Maybe that "slag" is that reason.
I just go by the color.

My quick google search found this third party fuel cap for Yamaha EF2000iS which is used to hook up an external fuel tank. So I guess it can be done.

I went with the EU2200 over any other similar output inverter generator due to the reliability and better access to service and repair parts if needed. It was painful to spend so much over a like rated westinghouse, generac, etc...but in reading reviews on them their achilles heel is parts and service.
That said, I am still contemplating a couple non-Hondas for emergency use at home with the EU2200 as a backup.
So far I'm happy with the Honda but have had very little use. I figured the big earthquake we had recently was going to be the first big test but our power was back on in less than 3 hours
The EU2200 does start and run the AC just fine on our trailer.

You might not be surprised if you look at the engine specs. I'm using the specs from Yamaha (not that retailer), but they're probably the same: Both the 2000 and the 2200 use a 79 cc engine, so to run at 1/4 of rated load the 2200 is working harder (running at higher load or speed or both) than the 2000. The 2400 has a much bigger 171 cc engine, so even though it is producing a bit more power at 1/4 load, the engine is relatively loafing.
I get the impression that these are not three slightly different sizes of the same model line, but rather three different styles of generator, all around two kilowatts. They weigh 44, 55, and 75 pounds respectively... very different packages.

I sold my Yamaha generator when I bought my first Escape with solar and have not missed the generator once, since then.

I have a question on this subject, wouldn't it be better to have a dual fuel generator? I have the Champion 3100 that I got a steal on at Cabela's for $600.00, it is not the dual fuel because when I bought it stupid me did not even know there was such a thing. We had a mod done to our Casita, we changed to a 30 gallon side mounted propane tank, then had rack welded above that for generator. We only used the set up a handful of time tailgating at football games but I sold several Champion generators for them because everyone was impressed with how quite they were for the money.
Part of the problem for me with our Escape is know where to carry it should I want to use it, since we tow with an SUV. I don;t really like the riding with the gas fumes so why I think dual fuel would be best choice but if you are towing with a truck guess that might not matter as much.
Other than AC pretty sure solar would run just about anything one would need these days. I know that is the one upgrade I will be doing on our Escape as soon as we get to start using it more.

William we plugged our Honda 2200 into the trailer and fired up the A/C unit and it works fine with no modifications.
Also I ran the generator as I try to do once a month the other day, it was -27C, it started no problem. The Honda 2200 also now has a fuel shut off so you can run it dry.
