Good choice with not getting gloss black laminate. It will show wear very quickly and because it is applied to a fairly low grade of plywood it will not have a perfectly flat appearance. Often the plywood will "telegraph" through.
Formica used to have an "SP #42" finish that was applied to many of their general purpose (GP) laminates. This was an addition layer that was bonded to the colour layer and is very durable. It did increase the sheen but only slightly.
Having been a profesional cabinetmaker specializing in commercial millwork for well over 20 years seeing gloss black laminate spec'd on jobs makes me shake my head!!!!

Cheers,

Paul S.

Thanks for this info, Paul. Even though I wasn't going to get glossy, it might help others with their decisions.

Also, I just sent you a PM about this subject.

I still like the Radiance finish for the darker laminates. It's not smooth, but textured. Just provides a higher sheen than the matte, and lends itself well to darker colors, providing more depth.

We've ordered the Mineral Jet radiance. I hear what you're saying about it not holding up. But a lot has to do with how you take care of things. I didn't find any other Formica that went well with the fabrics I chose for our trailer, so we're thinking we'll be fine. YMMV.

Actually, in looking at some of the darker finishes I am having remorse at having blown the option off....sets off the whole interior so much nicer than the standard Formica, in my opinion anyway....Karen

I've usually got so much stuff on the counters that I can't see much Formica anyway.

Same here
We have 4 people using the 17B. Even the table stays as bed whenever the weather is nice enough outside.

We chose dark counter top to match the stove. I was actually leaning towards some "gold" (glorified yellow?) Formica when I thought we are getting the white stove.

I had black counters and and edges for my build several years back. At the time, Escape didn't offer them so I had to supply the materials but they willingly installed them. I ordered the black edging from a supplier in Texas because I was adamant about having black. I also sourced out black screw cover caps and black trim to replace the backsplash coping. I figured if I was going to spend big dollars on a new trailer, then I wanted it my way! And as the norm, Tammy and Reece were fine with it.

I turned in my first Build Sheet this past week with Matte Black specified.

That's our feeling as well. Even though it'll be some time before we can actually afford to purchase the trailer and truck, we're already looking at countertop options. That's getting narrowed down to a blue (denim canvas) or two different blacks (basalt slate or midnight stone). Yesterday we looked at Sunbrella fabrics at a local store - have 4 samples on order. Flooring will be next.

If we go with black countertop, I really like how some folks have added in black handles and hinges - but that's another cost, so we'll have to see about that. Not sure if painting them will hold up over time.

Congratulations Ellen on your first build sheet! We changed ours many times until we signed off on it. Luckily ETI was very easygoing with all the questions and changes that we asked and made. Such great people to deal with!

Ellen, you have the right attitude when you say this is your first Build Sheet. I don't know how many revisions we went through before we were finished. That said, I think we would be happy to have our trailer in any of the configurations we went through...

Thanks, Leon! I hear ya - I'm pretty flexible - am sure I would love just the base 17B but . . . as long as those options are available and there's time to ponder . . .
