Mystery leakage on wheel
We're newbies and have lots to learn. I just picked up our 19 from storage to prep for a trip and noticed what looks like a grease stain on one wheel. Any ideas what might cause this? Thanks.

Heat on a wheel that's just been sitting will do that. It happens on the sun side of my Scamp... it also has the EZ-Lube axle. Unless someone else thinks it's something else...

Over greased brgs. can over heat as will under greased . Look on the other side and check for grease leaking from seal area . When I pull in for gas I go back and check the wheel rims for over heating . Warm is ok but hot - danger - The tire and rim should be about the same temp If it gets hotter to the center , be aware of pending trouble . I have no grease stains coming from the front / check the cap and see if it is seated proper .

If it's the grease breaking down from heat, you could try the sticky red grease, supposed to hold up better in high heat situations. Someone here may know more about it then I.

Great information, everybody, thanks. It's been in storage for three months during extreme heat, record number of days over 100 in July, so that's probably the issue. We'll keep an eye on it, but we're headed up to Oregon to much cooler temps. Thanks.

Wheel temperature is greatly affected by how much braking you were doing immediately before stopping. Brakes stop by inducing friction, friction causes heat, brake drums are in direct contact with rims, and those rim dissipate some of that heat. I've pulled in to get gas when I did very little braking and the drums and wheels are quite cool, and pulled into a gas station at the bottom of a hill and the drums and wheels were far from cool.

John, I think your curiosity more than justifies purchase of a new "toy" for your trailer, if you don't already have one, such as:
https://ennologic.com/using-your-dua...e-diagnostics/
Several on this forum have and use such a device and can provide you with specific suggestions on makes, models and usage. Some simply go by sense of touch as mentioned.

When I had my Casita, I carried a small digital infrared temp sensor to read temps on wheels. Was very accurate and worked great. Before I had that, when stopped for gas etc. I would carefully touch the center bearing cap of each wheel, as previously mentioned warm OK, Hot = Impending Danger Will Robinson!

I do the same at each gas stop. I have noted that, on a sunny day, the sunny side wheel and bearing cover are warmer than the other side. (i.e. all day on an east-west Interstate, the south side of the trailer gets all the sun.)
