Sink Trap Clean-Out Leak
My wife and I were checking things over on our 5.0TA before an upcoming trip and discovered we have a leak at the Clean-Out on the Sink Trap. I checked and the Clean-Out Screw Cap was tight. I unscrewed the Screw Cap and noticed a hardened yellow residue inside the Screw Cap which I suspect may be some extra ABS glue. Could this residue be the culprit for the leak? I also noticed what appears to be a recess in this Screw Cap where a gasket or o-ring might go, but nothing is there. Should this Screw Cap have a gasket or o-ring of some sort to provide for a water tight seal? I am a definitely no expert when it comes to plumbing.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Mark

I know a good solution to the sink trap - get rid of it. If / when the trap gets clogged, there is no way to clean it as it is glued in with no disconnects. A Hepvo solves the problem and makes the drain work better at the same time.

Yes, I have thought of the Hepvo. I won't have time before this trip so I have got to come up with a solution quickly so we can use the sink. Thanks, as that is a great longterm solution.

Yes, there should be a gasket - that would explain the leak.

A product like this will take care of the leak until you can come up with a better, permanent fix.

You may not like my solution. I put a plastic shoe-box in the cabinet under the sink. Every other day I drain the shoebox. Pretty ugly solution, but dollar stores have shoe boxes. Katrina

IF you thought you'd never need to open the Clean-Out Screw Cap again, you could always just glue the dang thing shut. Maybe something like JB WaterWeld around the very top.

Thanks everyone. I was able to stop the leak by using a Danco #18 O-Ring (96735) in the groove of the clean-out cap on the Canplas 3201A P-Trap installed by ETI during the build. I am not sure if the clean-out cap should have had an o-ring or gasket during the install or if the ABS glue that had drained down to the clean-out cap was the the problem. Any way, no leaks for now!

Mark, This is my best effort to take a closeup photo of our galley sink drain trap cap. It has never leaked (so far) and appears to incorporate a simple compression seal with no gasket. It does look like a bit of glue dripped down into the center portion, but there is no obstruction preventing a tight seal within the cap or feeling up into the trap. That said, it's good to have your reference for an O-ring just in case a problem develops in the future. Thanks.... Dale

Dale, your cap looks just like mine. Except, mine has a considerable amount of ABS glue in the cap. Much, Much more than yours! In fact, it is flush with the lip at one point. I suspect glue is what is preventing a tight seal and causing the leak. Maybe I will give ETI a call and see about getting a new cap as I can't seem to find one like it around here. Thanks again everyone!

It appears that a "pipefitter" at ETI needs to be less liberal in their application of glue! More isn't always better....
