Yeah, I hear what you are saying Jim. I've carried the socket set and a set of metric wrenches in my Toyota trucks for years and have seldom, if ever, needed them. I keep thinking that doesn't mean I won't need them at some point, though. I say "socket set" but the case only measures about 10" x 6" x 1 1/2" so it's not huge by any means.
My thinking on carrying most of the stuff for our inital trip with the Escape is, after reading a couple threads here about finding loose fittings and screws, etc. rattling loose, I want to be prepared to tighten stuff up without having to buy duplicate tools on the road. Once I get over the initial trip and I'm more familiar with the trailer I'll likely pare my tools down, too. Plus, I haven't mentioned, I was a Cub Scout, a Boy Scout and a Venturer so the "Be Prepared" mantra is deeply ingrained.
