This is what I do too. The originals are usually a good road tire, and I prefer something more aggressive. I do buy a second set of winter tires to help in these cold and snowy conditions.

I think the comment has nothing to do with tire balance, but the additional wear in can impose on a rubber valve stem with a bit more weight at the end of it.

This has been discussed, as I plan on putting the 3M protectant on the front of my 5.0 when I get it, in the areas affected by rock chips. I don't think I will do anything in the wheel wells though....
