I've been watching all the 2024 testing videos. The hybrid isn't out until the spring, but the new turbo engine is looking better for towing. Torque maxes out just above idle speed, so hopefully the engine won't have to rev as high when towing.

Are you speaking about the Tacoma or Tundra Hybrid?

I was talking about the Tacoma. The non-hybrid turbos just came out for 2024. They are introducing a hybrid turbo for some trim levels later this year.

Out of curiosity, how many miles per year do you tow? Operating an 11mpg vehicle is expensive, but unless you're driving 10s of thousands of miles per year, 15mpg probably isn't going to make that much of a dent in your overall operating costs.

True, but it sure limits his range

My Expedition seems to get about 13 mpg towing, and 17-20 mpg highway not towing... I'm about to leave on a 8000 mile road trip next week. That's maybe 600 gallons at 13, or 30 20 gallon fill ups (23.3 gallon tank). At 18 mpg, it would be about 450 gallons.

My 3.5 EB F150 gets about the same mileage as John's. Speed, Headwinds and Uphills are killers to MPG.
You can't fix uphills but you can stop on windy days and I find by not exceeding 55 MPH I can get up to 25 MPG (not towing). However, I can easily get down to 17 MPG going 70 MPG. That 8 MPG swings keeps my right foot a little lighter.
I try not to exceed 62 MPH when towing. "Try" being the key word.

There in lies the problem. The 3.5 EcoBoost is such a willing motor, it will pull our 5.0 as fast as we want to go which can get pretty expensive at the gas pump. We usually stay at 65mph and pull in 11-14mpg towing the 5.0 in the desert southwest and southern Rockies
Having towed a 3500lb Rpod with a mid-size pickup for over 50,000 miles, I can say that on a good day, our Nissan Frontier would do as good as the F150 as far mpg. Add in hills or a headwind or Heaven forbid, both and things got bad pretty quick. Throw in a small, 20 gallon gas tank and some distance between gas stations, you quickly become good friends with a 5 gallon gas jug.

There is no good answer to the poor fuel economy. Travel light, fill up water at destination sight etc, etc. bottom line is , you want a trailer and you own a gas truck, that’s the way it is. If it bothers you that much, move to a tent trailer or tent. Can we move on….:.

For the rest of us we'll keep beating the dead MPG horse. There's nothing wrong with discussing a topic at length.

I bought this to replace my 2019 Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4x4 Double Cab Long Bed, which I have LOVED since buying it new in 2019. I just could no longer ignore the Tacoma's puny payload capacity (~1,100 lbs. stock from the factory) lackluster & under-powered V6 and terrible 10-12 mpg highway mileage (while towing the same trailer) 14-16 mpg not towing.
The F-150 is perfectly suited for full-time towing and has more than enough capacity to upgrade to the 21NE F2 I've been considering.

You might want to check your yellow "Tire Loading" sticker on your driver's door pillar to see your actual payload for your specific vehicle. The value you stated above appears to be about 1,000 # too much for a " regularly equipped" F-150, unless you got the stripped / no options " Max payload of 3,315 lbs. on Regular Cab 8' box 4x2 with 5.0L gas engine and Max Trailer Tow and Heavy-Duty Payload Packages"

At the top of the page is a drop down tab titled "Thread Tools". Just click on that and you'll see it.

I don't get emails for any topics. The email notices are definitely optional and controllable. (However, I view on the web, not via a phone app. Maybe the apps are set up differently.)

I'm using the web interface, and I do get notification emails on the first new post to a subscribed thread, but my mail client sorts all those to a 'Forums' category, so I can chose to ignore them.

A small turbo diesel is a way to resolve the poor MPG problem. If you are going to tow distances, it’s a great choice. Not such a great choice for short, around town trips. But that’s what we have a Leaf for…

Personally, I love talking and reading about trucks, tires, oil, mechanical stuff, etc.

I, too, enjoy reading about truck stuff, gas mileage, etc., especially when it pertains to the same equipment I use. In this case a 2017 Tacoma pulling our 2017 E19. Sure, I would like better mpg towing. But I wanted a Toyota and a Tundra is too big for me. With the Tacoma I'm in the 11-13 mpg range on the flat driving at 55-60. In the mountains obviously less. But as someone pointed out, the 3rd generation Tacoma engine develops its best power at around 4,000 rpm if I recall correctly. That's a bonus towing in the Rockies. Those passes are steep and the Tacoma handles them just fine, albeit with engine noise.
