Production of Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon 2.8L diesel ending in 2022

Posting because I’ve seen more than several folks here who are considering one of these mid-size diesels for their tow vehicle. If this is you, you need to move fast and either find one on a lot or order one by June.

This bums me out because my 2017 Colorado has been a stellar tow vehicle for my 19, and that gas mileage… oooo la la, 32 mpg not towing, 18 - 20 towing!! As I’ve often said, if/when I need to replace what I have, I would absolutely buy another one. Sadly, I won’t have that option years down the road.

But, I understand why GM made this decision, and I’m intrigued with the 2023 re-vamp of the brand, which from what I can tell, will have specs that far exceed both the current gas and diesel versions. I highly doubt it will match the diesel in terms of fuel efficiency though. But we’ll see.

Although I personally don’t want to drive a full size pickup, the Silverado 1500 diesel has nearly the same fuel efficiency as my Colorado with far more capability, and as far as I can tell, there are no current plans to halt production. It’s an option too, for any diesel lovers out there!

Do they recommend special low-ash oil for those small diesels, the way FCA does for theirs?

Every on highway diesel (small, passenger car ones up to class 8 semi engines) have been using low SAPS oils since the introduction of particulate filters in 2007.

I've been very happy with our 2016 diesel Canyon. Now at 70,000 miles and zero problems other than a flat tire, a chipped windshield and a rattling engine control unit. Stopped the rattle with a rag jammed between the firewall and the ecu.

I’m happy with our 2.8l diesel Canyon. Looking forward to towing our 5.0 with it in a couple more months.

For background, the factory that builds the Duramax 2.8 in Thailand was sold by GM. GM has still been buying the engines, but it's not surprising that they don't want to continue doing that. The slightly larger displacement diesel in the Silverado/Sierra 1500 is an unrelated engine from a different source, but is an inline-six that likely wouldn't fit in the Colorado/Canyon.

The 2023 Colorado/Canyon is expected to replace the current choice of three engines and 8-speed transmission with something similar to the Ford Ranger: one turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engine and a 10-speed transmission. The engine is the 2.7 L already available in the Silverado/Sierra 1500, and the transmission is the design shared by Ford and GM (but built separately by each company in slightly different specific versions). The new engine is more powerful than any of the previous engines, and has a much broader power band than any of them; it will tow very well, but will likely not have the fuel economy of the diesel.
