My buddy has had two hitch receivers and brake controllers installed by U-Haul. He had to take the vehicle back for adjustment once, but he paid about half what I paid at a hitch shop.

You might want to compare weight of components as well as price. I think my Pro Series is one of the cheapest, and heaviest WDH.

What company makes the Pro Series and what weight rating do you recommend? Thanks!

I do not know the company that makes them. They are of Chinese manufacture. We had absolutely no problem with ours. When tightened down we had four links hanging free and the next one under tension. There is a good you tube video with Karl from Escape showing the “hookup” on both of the hitches. Note that you will need to provide your own two inch ball for the hitch. We usually use Valley or Curt balls on our stingers. I don’t know where they are rated but 5 or 6 thousand lbs will do fine. Just remember that on the pro series you can get adjustment on ball height by putting the attachment bolts through different holes in the tower and you can flip the tower over for more height selections. And for tension you can select different links of chain but also remember it should be the same on both sides. Once you flip the lever over keep one hand on the lever bar and insert the pin with your other hand. Don’t let go of the lever until the pin is in. You can make it a lot easier to flip it over center by putting the A frame jack pipe down and slightly raising and putting “up pressure” on the hitch. When you do this, if you have good hand strength and are parked on level pavement you dont always have to use the bar and can amaze and impress your friends. Wear Non insulated leather gloves whenever you work around steel with your hands. 60 years experience talking here.
Hope this helps.

Pro Series is a brand of Horizon Global Corporation, formerly known as Cequent. They have their own factories, but could get anyone to make products or components of products, under any of their brands. Many Horizon/Cequent products have been sold under multiple brands (including U-Haul); their own hitch brands include Reese, Hidden Hitch, and Draw-Tite, and brands for other towing and trailer products include Bulldog, Fulton, Tekonsha, Bargman, Rola, and Wesbar.

Weight distribution systems are not even listed on the Pro Series website any more, so it is strange that Escape still has this brand.

The weight ratings of WD hitch systems (where, like this, there is a choice of ratings in the same model of hitch) are just the stiffness of the spring bars. The softest springs (lowest weight rating) is easiest to install and easiest on the structures of the trailer and tow vehicle. As with most brands and models, the softest Pro Series WDH will be the "600 pound" rating (which is supposed to roughly correspond to tongue weight).

Providers

Thanks for your comments and research Brian. Opens a persons eyes to how wide ranging the number of brands produced under a corporate umbrella. Your research and posting are appreciated by many.

Hi Johnny
You may encounter people who are impressed with the weight of some of the components on the less expensive hitch. The trunion bars are pretty stout but were not a challenge for me to handle with one hand so with two hands it shouldn’t be a problem for most folks. One thing I never leave home without is a foam kneeling pad . That gravel in campgrounds gets my knees, if I don’t have a pad. Just a small common garden pad is all I use. Lots of time I only have to put one knee on the ground. Take an old large screwdriver along as a lightweight pry bar in case you need a little help with something that “gets in a bayou” as we used to say when we logged the big stringy Elm trees in the 70s.
In a tribute to the day the music died:
“See you later alligator”

Hi Dave, Gonna have Escape mount the hitch, and meet them in Sumas. I can't see paying 2k to have it delivered to Madison Wi and driving 4 hrs to go get it. I have a brother in Sandpoint Idaho, 7 hrs from Sumas. I can visit with them for a week or so. Hopefully i can back it in his driveway with some practice.

I’ve been to Sandpoiint a number of times. Lots of nice country in that area Lake Pend O’reille ,Post Falls, Cour d Alene mostly spelled wrong by me but all nice, .great mid May camping and on into June. Been visiting northern half of Idaho since 1969, still haven’t had enough.

I concur on Lake Pend Oreille, my brother homesteaded out there from Toledo Ohio in 1976. Summers can be short, but great weather. Minimal humidity.

Priest River

When we camp on the Priest River I make it a point to walk through some of the Old Growth forest and feel that spongy duff of the forest floor and take deep breaths in the Hemlock and
Grand Fir. It’s certainly a delight for the senses.
