Always good for the tug and the trailer’s frame to drive on wet, salty sand. One of my acquaintances drove her Jeep on Daytona Beach a few years ago. When the corrosion appeared a few months later, she was rather unhappy. She should have hosed it done several times afterward, especially the underside.

Thanks. The sand is quite hard so its rather easy to drive on. Still a little scary if you get stuck and the tide is coming in!!!

Good point about the salt. We did drive slow on the sand and came thru a Pacific Northwest Rain Storm afterwards.

Side point. How do you find the vw pulls the 21? I have the new vw atlas which is similar to the Touareg and thinking about getting the escape 21 I was just worried about towing it.

My only experience driving on the beach with the camper did not go well even though am pulling with a 4WD F150 . Lake McConaughy here in western Nebraska.... got stuck in no time. But, it was in deep "fluffy" sand, not hard packed. Nice guy in a tractor pulled me out. for $60. He makes side-change by hauling peoples campers from the pavement right down to the waters edge.
Anyone have experience driving / camping on the beach at Padre Island National seashore? Something I'd like to try but am a little gun shy since I've read its a lot of $$$ to get pulled out if you do get stuck. A retired comedy radio host I love has lived to tell about the experience Boondocking on the Beach - June Bug Journeys

Dipnetting for salmon on the south bank of the Kenai River. Barely got the truck above the high tide line. When the tide went out the next day we dropped the pressure in the tires to 20 psi and made a slow, careful run for the access road.
In retrospect bad idea. Heavy diesel, 3000 pounds of truck camper with street tires. Until we replace the Dodge with a half ton we’ll be hauling a wagon to the beach. Scott

While they're both larger SUVs from Volkswagen, there's no other relationship between the Touareg and the Atlas. They're completely different designs underneath, so experience with one won't mean much about the other.

Would snow chains help in this situation?

It tows like a dream. I have never felt like the vehicle is straining and being pushed around by the trailer.
Plus the interior is so well designed and comfortable, hours on the road are quite comfy.
