One of the guys in our overlanding club has one of those 5-tons... showed up at a rally with his Jeep in the bed of it.

I've met a few Europeans driving Unimog type RVs that they brought into the US for a year or two of travel. Seriously Big! The biggest thing I'd miss (other than an empty wallet from paying for fuel) is windows.

This thread reminds me of my friend Stan's truck. Wonder if he's willing to add a cab to it.

That’s ONE POINT SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS so some rich golden throne prima donna who made his money off the back of the poor can go on a personal adventure.

Back of the poor, geesh! When did a poor man ever give anyone a job?

I have looked into earth roamers a lot. Not because I would buy one but because I thought I could copy some of the design elements in a truck camper. I have concluded that a reasonably short trailer that can be disconnected to explore off road in the tow vehicle is more practical for me considering you need a dually or super singles to support a comfortable truck camper.
They are very cool and for someone with a lot of disposable income, probably would be a lot of fun.

Yup, getting a little political, but I agree. None of the people I know that could buy one were born rich. They got where they are by hard work, taking a risk and hours most wouldn't put up with.
It's amazing how well traveled Germans are and how they like the mega utes. We sometimes feel guilty because any time we come across them traveling or cruising we sort of expect that if we start a conversation in English they'll respond in English, usually pretty well spoken. And they do which is good because I couldn't be bothered learning German in school.

That's on a Unimog... a popular choice in Europe for the larger (but not largest) expedition campers.

A visitor can bring a vehicle which does not comply with U.S. or Canadian regulations, but must take it back home by a scheduled date. It is done routinely, but it's an expensive exercise and not common.

The Landcruiser is a capable choice, but it's surprising that a German built on a Toyota.

Only the last one is an actual Unimog (Unimogs are never forward control cabs), but the other two are typical of the style of truck used for the larger units. The biggest are often from MAN, although not these.
Some models have a design like a Hi-Lo trailer, with an upper section that raises and exposes windows. These ones are all fixed, so those little windows are all you get. These things are often taken to sketchy places, so low and large windows are avoided. For anyone wanting to sit around inside and look at the scenery, most expedition campers would be disappointing.
I'll try (on my phone... never used it to post photos) to show the camper we saw at Peggy's Cove a couple of years ago; it was on a MAN truck chassis and had the raising roof design. I can't remember what was under the cover on the rear lift.

I'd wondered about the previous lack of windows comment because the one we were in had lots of light, enough that the carved glass shower door could be seen as a work of art. I'd forgotten that the upper part went up like an old Alaska camper. Pretty secure when the top was down and the m/c carried at the rear was so high in the air that no one was going to able to easily steal it.

I've done a lot of traveling around the world for various reasons and English is spoken everywhere I've been. In many countries it is required in secondary schools. I don't know if it still is but it was the last time I was in Germany.
We simply don't need to learn another language and that's a shame.

This article says the EarthRoamer body is carbon fiber:

I saw some of the "rugged" trailers shown in this article during my trip out West early this year.

Found the photo of the other rig
I stumbled across it in my morass of photos. Must get organized! Now's the perfect time, with the "stay-at-home" and Fall weather here.
Yeah, right!
Image is of the other German rig at Fort Pickens NSP near Pensacola, FL. It didn't appeal to me, but it is impressive. If 'ya gave me one, I sure would find someplace to use it.
