Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
Part 1 of 3
Since the day I got it, my Escape 19 has made a loud hammering noise whenever the water pump runs. This is caused by the pipes attached to the water pump rattling against the framing. I tried stuffing foam between the pipes and the frame and, while it helped a lot, it was still pretty bad. The reason that the pipes rattle is that the rigid PEX piping that is used for the water supply system is attached directly to the diaphragm type water pump.
The SHURflo Installation and Operation Manual for the pump recommends:
- at least 1ft. [.3 M] of ½" [13mm] I.D. flexible high-pressure tubing to both ports.
- The pumps ports/strainer should not be connected to plastic or rigid pipe.
- The pump's normal vibration may transmit through rigid plumbing causing noise, and possibly loosen or crack components.
I finally had enough and bought the SHURflo 94-591-01 Pump Silencing Kit from Amazon.com for $22. It consists of 2 pieces of flexible tubing, one for the inlet and one for the outlet, and a few fittings to attach them. Since the inlet already has flexible tubing attached, one kit can do two trailers.
The parts used are shown in the first picture.
The second picture shows the outlet side of the pump as it came installed from the factory. I had already undone the fitting when I remembered to take pictures.

Part 2 of 3
Undo the fitting on the outlet side and rotate the tee it is attached to 90 degrees. The metal fitting should turn inside the PEX pipe. It should look like the first picture below.
Then insert the male/male adapter that came in the kit and tighten the fitting onto it. Firmly tighten by hand, no tools required. When done, it should look like the second picture below.

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
Part 3 of 3
Then take the flexible tube and attach one end to the pump outlet and the other end to the fitting that you just put on. Once again, the fittings should be firmly tightened by hand, no tools required. There is a rubber nose in the female fitting and there is no point in over compressing it. The tubing should make a smooth curve as is shown in the two pictures below. When I tried it, I could not believe how quiet it was. I couldn't even hear the pump over the sound of the water running into the sink.
Although it worked fine like this, I didn’t like the way that the pump was cocked on its rubber mounts by the outlet tube being pushed sideways by the PEX tee. I went back and put 5/16" shims under the two feet on the inlet side of the pump so that the rubber is relaxed when the pump is angled to one side. I also replaced the two #8x3/4" PH mounting screws with #8x1" PH screws to allow for the shims. I could have achieved the same effect by shortening the PEX tubing that goes to the hot water tank.
It is possible to so the same job without the kit by going to an RV store and buying the correct fittings and then buying some high-pressure tubing from Home Depot. I was going to go this route until I saw how inexpensive the kit was. I also prefer the crimped-on fittings kit has instead of using hose clamps.

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
Hi: Harold Kroeker...I always used the noise from the pump as a signal that I was going to have water!!! Our 5.0 already has flexible lines to the pump but maybe just not long enough. I always leave the line undone during winter storage, and you're right...no tools required.
Thanks for the pic's...I'm going to have to look into this solution. We leave the pump turned on at night for flushing, and when the pump runs...everyone's awake!!! Alf

I think that the pump waking me in the middle of the night is what finally drove me to do something about it. It is especially bad in the Escape 19 where the pump and rattling pipes are directly under the bed.

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
Harold,
I think you have created a monster. I am going to lay awake at night waiting for the pump to cycle to see if I have to implement your modification. Seriously, thank you for a well done explaination. On my next trip I will have to evaluate the noise and potential impact.

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
There is also a small plastic pressure tank that you can get along with the silencing kit. It helps the pump run less often, but for a bit longer when it does run - supposedly for longer pump motor life. I put one in when we had a Scamp and it did seem to help both with noise and how often the pump cycled.

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
All you need to do to stop hammering is a a U shape to the output side. This is commonly done in households where a hammering in the pipe is happening. This too will give you the flex. Just another option.

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
Harold, thanks for the post!
When we looked at an Escape trailer, the pump noise was the one thing that bothered me. The fix looks so simple, this is now at the top of my to-do list.
We will see how noticeable it is when we pick up our trailer later today. Now that I will be listening for it, I am sure it will sound like a jackhammer.

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
Your pump should not run in the night time, nor for that matter in the daytime unless you are using water. If it does operate, then you have a leak somewhere. Again, it should not run after shutting itself off, unless you turn on the water or there is a leak. The system is pressurized and it is the drop in pressure that starts the pump.

In our old trailer the pump never ran at night because it didn't have a toilet. That's one of the things about the Escape that "changed my life". I can now drink infinite beer while sitting around the campfire, knowing that when I have to go in the middle of the night, I won't have to battle mosquitos on the way to the bathroom. Now that the water pump will no longer wake my wife, I don't even need to feel guilty about the beer anymore.

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
I was thinking of getting one of these for the new Quahog... 15X15X12, is there room on the counter top or should I run a tap under the sink for outside use?

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
We just picked up our new 19' yesterday. No problem with a noisy pump. The pump source and drain are isolated from the rigid pipes with flex tubing. I'll see if I can post a pic from my phone.

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
Great, perhaps Reace already made that modification/improvement on the newer models.

I would appreciate a picture of the factory solution. It is probably more elegant than what I came up with and I may want to implement it on my trailer.

Re: Silencing the Escape 19 Water Pump
A few workarounds that I did in my Bigfoot and intend to do when I purchase my Escape.
1/ Loops of high pressure line to eliminate vibration in PEX plumbing
2/ Pump mounted on rubber pad
3/ Surge tank to allow pump to be turned off at night. Lots of pressure for toilet flushing, etc.
Cheers,
Kevin
