solar panel tp 7 pin

Does anyone know whether or not a solar panel can be connected to a trailer's 7 pin connector which would normally be plugged into the tow vehicle.

I have not done it personally but have seen it done. GoPower makes a 7 pin adapter with an Anderson connection. The panel used would need to have it own solar controller. If the controller is located on the panel quite a distance from the trailer battery you will want to have a decent gauge wire extension to minimize voltage drop.

Yes we have done it and it worked well. Just got a cheap connector from Princess Auto/Harbor freight and wired it to a portable solar panel with its own controller.

I put my controller in a box that plugs right into the trailer. The wiring that is between the trailer 7 pin and the front mounted battery(s) of a 19 is thick enough to handle anything a portable panel will put out.

I will be doing a write up my 180 watt portable solar system in June.

I've been considering placing my controller in a waterproof box to protect it from the rain. My battery is on the back bumper, not inside. But, I was concerned that perhaps heat could build up inside the box. Is that an issue?

It is portable so I don’t put it out in the rain.

While using in the sun I try and put it in the shade of the tongue with the lid propped open or use the propped open lid as shade for the controller.
