17B shower water temp question

I'm getting extremely hot water initially after having the shower head in the "pause" condition. Is this normal? I turn both the hot and cold water handles full on which gives about the perfect water temp. However after pausing the water using the shower head slider switch and then turning the switch to the on position to rinse off, for about the first 5 seconds only super hot water comes out until the mixing is proper again. Usually it is paused for about 3-4 minutes while I'm soaping up.

My pause button doesn't actually turn off the water completely. It still drips out of the shower head. I guess it is designed this way on purpose so that we don't forget to turn off the water faucet after using the shower. One of my theories is that the hot water is under higher pressure than the cold and is pushing it's way into the cold line.

This is the type of shower head I have...I think it's a standard ETI supplied item:

I sometimes get just the opposite, after pausing it's stone cold.

I have the opposite experience. I always get a short burst of cold water after turning the water back on at the showerhead; I aim it away when I first turn it back on. Not sure why two people would have the opposite experience. Perhaps it is related to how long the water is off at the showerhead?

I believe they are designed this way, but I don't know that that is the reason.

Both our factory ETI showerhead and the replacement I installed behave the same (initially cold when turned back on).

Perhaps, but I think that actual purpose is to reduce the problem that others have had, of the water in the hose getting cold.

That's possible. If there is a check valve in the cold supply line to the heater then as the water temperature in the heater rises (catching up after you were using hot water, while you're paused), the pressure in the tank and everywhere downstream in the hot water piping can increase. I have noticed that sometimes the hot water will spurt out of a faucet when first opened if it hasn't been used for a while. On the other hand, if there is no check valve in the heater's supply line, then the extra pressure would be applied to the cold water as well.

This would likely solve your problem. You would need a check valve on your cold water line to the shower or both lines to be safe and an independent shutoff at the base of the shower head.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like this is common. I will live with it then. I do the same as others...turn the shower head away from me until the water temp is tolerable.
