9500E Awning Retracted Manually

On our last campout with our 2020 Escape21 our 9500E awning got stuck in the extended position. I was forced to manually retract the awning and wait until I got home to look into the issue. Has anyone been able to extend their 9500E awning after manually retracting it? The manual only says to take it to an authorized service center.

See attached which shows the larger tube on the trailer removed as we were installing new awning fabric. Motor is out of the tube at this point.

You need straps to control the spring-loaded arms that unfold as the awning unrolls.

You can roll it manually without the motor inside. However, extending the awning materials, re-inserting the motor, and then retract using the motor is best to maintain proper fabric tension.

Do you know how to access and control the upper tube? It takes two persons on ladders to do this.

Thanks for the response Gus. No I don't know how to access and control the upper tube. Is there a video on how to do this?

We watched a couple of the installation videos, and we used the 9500E installation manual to guide us. Not aware of a video on your specific issue.

From experience, be careful controlling the spring-loaded lateral arms that extend as you roll it out.

Took us a couple hours to remove, install new fabric, and reinstall.

The same awning on our 2020 21NE motor went out a year ago. Just talked with local RV shop last Thursday, after waiting whole year for a Dometic replacement motor, they said one should be here in two weeks from their distributor. However, RV shop looked on Dometic site and it indicated unavailable. They said “We shall see if we get one”.
We are seriously looking into having it changed over to manual awning. Realize this does not provide solution to your problem, but maybe this will help new buyers make a well informed decision on which awning to get.

Thanks for the reply. I dropped my escape off today. I'm expecting the issue to be the motor. Did your awning just not retract one day? I'll update the thread when I get some feedback on the issue and the lead time to fix it. A year wait for parts seems..like a long time!!

In one day, our awning deployed and retracted less and less each time we cycled it. So, we retracted it manually, but, we could not get it to properly “seat”. During retraction each revolution the tongue end of awning would act like it was going over a bump, or act like a couple of teeth in a gear were missing.
We are interested in how your situation plays out, and hope it is resolved to your satisfaction.

We will post all details of our efforts to have awning repaired.

My RV repair place just received the part kit they ordered. It includes the motor, controller, remote, etc. it has a Dometic part number so I wonder if Dometic sells this as an upgrade kit. Should be fixed in a couple of days.

My awning repair was completed pretty quickly.. the day after I dropped off my trailer. It's behaving a little different in that I'm seeing a "jog" when I retract part way and stop but not when I extend. The awning does go out and comes back in. It was kind of breezy when I picked it up so I need to play with it some more. I hope your fix goes well.

Glad to hear you got the repair in a timely manner. When deploying our awning and we stop it part way, it does a slight retract. When retracting and stop it, we do not see the same response.

What is your “jog” when you stop retracting?

The "jog" is when the awning stops then moved in the opposite direction for a short time then stops.

I correct my previous post. The jog is the norm on ours - in both directions.

New awning motor installed

It took just over a year to source and have new motor replaced.
Cost: motor assembly kit - $830.66
Labor - 217.50
Shop supplies - 31.13
Total. $1,079.29
(Psst - just between you and me - wish we had used those funds toward new manual awning)
RV shop had to order second kit, first motor malfunctioned. 🙄
Due to a number of factors we will not give it real test until early January 2023, when we are at Florida Eggs-travaganza.
Happy New Year All !

Thanks for the update.

If our motor fails and I can’t get it rebuild, we will go for a manual awning.

That total is just under $1500 Canadian and we would probably have to pay more shipping to get it across the boarder.

George and Linda, we are going to the "Florida Egg Rally & S’More" in Live Oak, FL starting Jan 13. If this is the one your going to it would be fun to meet.
