Beef-up receiver

I wonder if it is possible to beef-up the receiver on the back of the trailer to handle 2 e-bikes. Anyone ever try doing that?

Likely do-able by a competent welder / fabricator.

Physical strength notwithstanding, the concern remains regarding sway-inducing rear weight bias.

Relocating the spare to under the tongue as some have done may help mitigate that factor.

I wouldn't beef it up. I'd U bolt or weld on 2 more receivers to the frame. Others have done this to carry a heavier rear box or rack etc. The advantage is that it eliminates side-to-side sway.

Ron, I can’t visualize what you are suggesting. Could you explain the 3 receivers concept?

The weight limit on the back hitch is not it’s strength.
It is to much weight at the very back causing the trailer to be unstable.
With to much weight at the very back it makes the tongue weight lighter and can cause the trailer it sway at higher speeds. The trailer will start to fish tail and can cause you to crash.
Thus the suggestion to “move the spare tire to the front”

“Could you explain the 3 receivers concept?”
Installing additional receivers left and right of the center receiver .
One person added receivers where the trailer frame meets the rear bumper.
Use the search feature, the post has pictures.

It is possible, I have done it in the past, not on my current Escape but on my last trailer which was an Arctic Fox. We were camp hosting in Duluth, MN, and I found a mobile welder who came out and did the job on site. He added several metal brackets, welded them on at the key points of the frame and bumper. We were then able to carry our 2 very heavy e-bikes all around the country, never had an issue! I think the key is finding the right welder...

Hi: Videocrafters... Reminds me of that famous line "Where's the beef"?
We met an Escape owner w/ 2 eBikes on the back of his combo. I didn't ask if he did anything special as he was to distraught about losing a battery off one of the bikes. Alf
