Is there a reason this furnace is preferred by ETI? There are obviously 'new and improved' models. Where do they fall short?

That furnace is no longer made. They are onto another model but not to say it is different on the above situation. Don't know.

The Atwood Everest Star 8012 is not designed for use with ducts, and therefore can use a lower-power fan; it has the lowest electrical power consumption of readily available RV furnaces, about half of other furnaces of similar heat output.
It has been discontinued by Atwood, and so Escape is switching to the newer replacement from Atwood - see Furnace change on Escape 21 a shocker The specs for the new unit prove that the 'new and improved' model is no more efficent than the old one, and my experience with other new-style Atwood furnaces is that they're no miracles of reliability, so I don't know that they're "improved" at all.
There are efficient, low-power, compact, modern furnaces available... but they are expensive and not normally distributed in North America, so I wouldn't expect Escape or any other RV manufacturer to use them. The Propex line is an example.

Yes, this lower-power fan produces a slower airflow, which is why this furnace requires the odd sail switch with the bigger "sail".

Sweet, sweet sail switch, how I despise thy earnestwhile but futile efforts.
....
Old thread, same problem. Will go see of any parts guy has the correct switch in stock.
Any tips on cleaning the 8012 burner? It seems to be behind several barriers.

I've had trailers with both furnaces. The new Escape provided Atwood draws about .5 amps more, but is much quieter. I've only been using it for 8 months, so I can't speak for reliability...

Another reason to carry a spare electric or install a permanent electric heater, always have a backup if needed.

Mike quoted part number 36134
My parts guy said 'discontinued' and mentioned the standard model (ie, the thin vane) had superseded it. He handed a dusty one to me, but no model number visible, which is just as well, as it looks some dremel time would be needed to make it work.
Will look at clearing fluff, after happy hour.

This is not good news. I dragged my feet and never bothered to get a spare sail switch, and now they are discontinued! Guess I learned my lesson. Dang.

Does anyone know the original sail switch part number? I think I'll hit up a couple of RV parts places... quickly.

Here's a snip from the original Everest II parts list, with the part numbers highlighted. The one mentioned above should work: Atwood Hydro Flame 36134 Sail Switch - 80ii. It's still showing available in all kinds of places, including Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/36134-ATWOOD-.../dp/B00P80S2CK
The original looks like the 36133 and the 36134, which was on the 7900 II and the 8012 II furnace, respectively. That part number has been replaced however with the 36680. The 36680 is readily available, as far as I can tell.

I have repaired furnaces for several people . To make trouble shooting easier I attached a set of wires to the sail switch and made them long enough so you could attach a tester or test switch to the wires without removing the furnace.

Have a redneck fix in place, should I need to get heat when not near a current bush and before a proper fix.
Thanks to posters here and the older threads too. Finding those requires heater, furnace and or sail switch in the keywords to dig up all the good info.
