quiet connectors - rubber carabiner (sort of)
Hi all
not sure if this sort of thing exists...
our shade sail above our Escape has grommets all down one side....
i have eye screws into our rafters, under our house, along one long side of the shade sail.
currently I have metal carabiners attaching the shade sail to the eye screws... all down one long side..... works great but in the wind they squeak and rattle... and in the bedroom adjacent to that the squeaking and rattling can be heard.
If I had what would be like a rubber carabiner (or some sort of rubber closure) to use instead of the metal carabiners the sound would mostly go away.
any ideas?
Looking for a strong and *neat* and clean looking solution, so hunks of rope are not good for me.
thanks for any thoughts.
john

I've used sheet rubber to wrap things that rub successfully. It may eventually move out of place with wind moving it though. Maybe duct tape the rubber over the carabiner? Also you may find rubber grommets that will fill the metal grommets. Look at McMasters https://www.mcmaster.com/#grommets/=1cvsz78

How about short pieces of rubber hose fed onto the hook? As long as the hose isn't too large in diameter to fit onto the grommets it should dampen the sound.

rubber grommets
You may want to consider this;
https://www.mcmaster.com/#rubber-grommets/=1cvt9j8
There may be a size to fits your eye screws and shade grommets. Then use your standard carabiner in-between?

If you are familiar with boats and knots you can use very small diameter line and wrap the carabineers in the line. You can do this in a way that you hide the ends so they look good and don't come undone.

thanks for all the thoughts...
to clarify
the gromits on the shade sail are pretty small (so no space for carabiner + something new wrapping the carabiner)
so i'm looking to 100% get rid of anything metal doing the support.
there are about 10 points of attachment (rafters -> adjacent gromits on shade sail) so the load is well distributed, so does not need to be massively strong.
so getting rid of the current carabiners, and replacing with something not metal at all.
thanks.

I had to make a custom exhaust pipe support for my car. I cut a piece out of a car tire. It's very strong but flexible. Could you use a piece of similar material bolted to the grommet and hook?

Would coating the existing carabiners in Plastidip or similar work?

They sell bungie cord material on a roll. It is quite strong and would give a little flex to the shade fabric too.

really good idea.... i may go this way....
although i'd be afraid of the knots coming apart... and also UV frying it over the years...
looking for a robust rubber solution. ideally.

Spray plastidip. Quick and would get you by till the real thing comes along. Good idea Glenn Baglo.

Camping twist ties are available. You can get some pretty heavy-duty ones. Google them if interested.

A bag of handcuff grade zip ties and a pair of sidecutters to trim and remove. Like those old Frisco logging pants, Can’t bust em.

It will fry over the years but so will rubber and anything else that is not metal. You can get crimp together connectors to avoid the knot problem.

Slide something like this over you carabiners;

Or try a good martini before bed time.

Probably could slide the right size of heat shrink tubing over the metal of the carabiner and the n shrink with hair dryer. Maybe a couple of layers.
