Removing the plastic lug nut cover
I know there was discussion about the plastic lug nut cover recently but I can't find it at the moment. When we picked up our 5.0TA on Friday they reinforced the importance of checking and torquing the lug nuts several times in the first few hundred miles. At orientation they just popped off the plastic lug nut cover by hand and it looked easy, but that did not work for me. They had also mentioned using a flat head screwdriver but that didn't work well either and it wanted to scratch the rim and tear up the slotted opening in the plastic cover somewhat.
I found that a curved brake adjustment tool - brake spoon - is the perfect tool for prying the plastic cover off. The curve in the tool is just the right angle for inserting the flat blade in the slot in the plastic cover and prying it up. You can work it around just like popping the lid on a paint can, usually as soon as it is lifted up on one side it's pretty easy to pull the rest of the way off by hand.
