2016, Oct 6-9: Fall NOG - Northern Oregon Gathering

As a group we had decided to go to Cape Lookout. Saturday (1/9) Kathie (Dave&Kathie) and I took a day road trip to the park. Most of it is closed for the season, so we first drove around and looked several times, then walked what was closed. The only loops that would be suitable for a NOG were A and B loops, all tent sites, no services. But, we thought it would work. Yesterday I found out the state closes those loops on Sept. 30. There were no other sites in the open loops that would hold the Friday night gathering or pot luck. All the sites are small, most are in the trees and dark. While I may camp at Cape Lookout in the future, we won't be holding a NOG there.

So since everyone wants to go back to the beach, the Fall NOG is headed to Nehalem Bay State Park (Manzanita area). 95 miles west of Portland on Hwy 101. We were last there in the fall of 2013.

Once you make reservations (or have questions) feel free to post here, FiberglassRV or the CasitaForum... please don't post the same info in all three places... I have a short memory .

Nehalem Bay State Park rates are $29 for electric & water per day. Make reservations through ReserveAmerica or call ReserveAmerica at 1-800-452-5687 (during regular business hours).

As usual, I'll keep a park map updated and a list of participants going for those that have made reservations on the CasitaForum. I've chosen site A14.

We'll fill in details about the doin's when we get closer to October.

Thanks Anne, hope you are coming with that new 19! Can't wait to see it.

Kathie

PS We will be in A22. That's where we were at the last NOG there. Our 21 was in the build stage and we had sold the Casita. We borrowed our son's 13ft Scamp - not used to having an ice chest, left it outside overnight - you guessed it, the raccoons made off with everything except the salad!

Charlie & Cathryn will be in A27. Nehalem is our favorite "close runaway" park.

We're going to be at Nehalem Bay SP in July, and will be happy to return in October! We got site A19 Thursday - Monday.

So, what are the chances of getting our trailer in time for this? It's due Dec 28th, but I've read about others that got theirs earlier than originally planned.

Will the campground fill up for this rally and I should reserve a spot just in case? I'd love to go with a new trailer. Need to find out if they take payment in full ahead of time, I guess.

What to do, what to do, what to do? Ack!

Not sure I would count on it being two, nearly three, months early. They do, however, have Yurts at Nehalem.

You could reserve early (and pay) then if things don't schedule out for you and you had to cancel, you'd only lose $8 (reservation fee.) I've had to do that a few time when issues came up that prevented me from going. The NOGs do tend to have a LOT of attendees.

OR, you could just wait and see how things pan out for you Jan. Inevitably we have folks that need to cancel just before the NOG and if your trailer is ready you could snag one of the cancelling sites. But, you do take your chances.

When we stayed at Nehalem in 2009, early Oct., 'A' loop was full so we, and three or four others who didn't have reservations, had the entire 'B' loop to ourselves. Nobody drove through 'B' loop to get out, but everybody had to drive through 'A' loop, including us. We were in B 30 or 32.

Donna (or anyone in the know), are there certain loops reserved, and is there a clubhouse or area where activities happen? Is it better to stick to the inside of a loop, or does it really matter? Where would it be best to take Jasper for a run from? How many questions do I get to ask?

You can ask as many questions as you wish! Whether you get answers or not...

If you saw the map on the top post, I'm the yellow spot. Few trees, but I wanted sun!. The ones at the top (beach access) back up to a sand berm. They're more protected from wind and there are some trees. On A Loop the inside loop ones across from the berm back up to a wooded area. On the right side going down and around, those sites are in the trees. All of B loop is a lot more open than A Loop. The beach is usually pretty deserted if your dog likes to run on the beach.... and there may be a dog park here.... maybe.

All activities for Friday night and Saturday night happen in my site. I'll see if we might be able to get use of the Meeting Hall that's just outside A Loop. But renting these things is expensive, so we normally just wing it and hope for the best weather wise. I'll think further on this...

The top post also has a link where you can view the individual camp sites, you may find that helpful.

Does this help? You guys think you can make the NOG?

It's not that far down to the horsey loop, if you have a horse. The park even provides a shovel.

Nehalem Bay SP even has an airstrip for private airplanes and camping sites close by. It's definitely a park you'd like to have a bicycle handy! Loops D, E and F are closed to camping while we're at the Fall NOG.

Lisa is out in Ottawa right now dealing with stuff for her father, and I haven't asked her, but I plan to book in as part of a trip we plan to do this fall. Gotta work on being at least semi-retired soon.

And thanks for the added info, helped a bunch.

Hi Donna - That was Laura that wondered about their trailer being ready for the Fall NOG. I was signing up when I noticed Nehalem had yurts that they might utilize if they really wanted to attend and be assured of a place to sleep. BTW, we're in space A20 which I'm hoping is long enough for our trailer and tow (35' which means we'll hang over a bit in the back ... ).

Jan, you should be okay in that site. Check out this photo at Campsitephotos.com ... you can see there's some room for overhang beyond the tire-stopper thing at the end of the pad.

... and if you're coming from Felton you are pretty much required to bring a pallet of Morning Buns from Kelly's French Bakery... We'll be in a site right across from you.
