I think adoption by the automotive industry is the best possible thing to happen to a technology, since it massively increases production volume and brings down prices. Used electric vehicle battery packs are somewhat popular for energy storage in off-grid and demand-smoothing applications (and even some RVs), because they're affordable compared to anything new.
