Canadian fresh water...

A bit of trivia:
Canada has more lakes than the rest of the world combined. Approximately 60 percent of the world’s lakes are in Canada. At last count, there may be as many as two million, with 563 of them larger than 100 square kilometres. Among its largest lakes are Lake Huron in Ontario, Great Bear Lake in the Northwestern Territories and Lake Superior also in Ontario. The Great Lakes, straddling the Canada-U.S. boundary, contain 18% of the world's fresh lake water. In all, a whopping 9% of Canada’s surface is covered in fresh water.

I would say almost every one.

More fun facts. Lake Winnipeg, just north of us is the sixth largest lake in Canada, and if you include only those lakes totally within Canada then it would be number three after Great Bear and Great Slave. Number one Lake Superior, number two Lake Huron, and number five Lake Erie (minimally bigger than Lake Winnipeg) are all partially located in the US.

Lake Winnipeg has much of its water come from MN and ND via the Red River which flows through our town so I guess it's not really a totally Canadian Lake. One more fun fact, the Pembina River starts in MB flows east and south into ND where it meets the Red, then that international water reenters Canada.

Strange fact: We obtain our water from pristine, restricted access reservoirs. Because there might be a mudslide causing some turbidity in the water we also have a state of the art filtration system. Yet many folk still buy bottled water.

I remember as a teenager visiting my aunt in San Francisco. I went to the kitchen sink to get a glass of water. She gasped and said "we don't drink water from the tap". I was surprised, the concept of bottled water was new to me.

I drove up to Gimli on Lake Winnipeg while I was at the Boler rally. I found it interesting that this vast lake is only sixty feet deep, maximum.

There’s a lot of beaver in Canada. Giardia is a real possibility. I quit drinking out of creeks when I was about 15. Then drank out of mountain springs in Idaho in 69 and 70. But now mostly bottled water while camping. At home we’ve got a deep well and have it tested for nitrites, nitrates, E. coli etc by the county heath folks. We still don’t regularly drink it and never give it to the youngn’s. Mercury in fish is a big problem too as well as other chemicals.
Be careful with what you drink. Whiskey, Bottled in bond has always been a favorite of mine.

Calgary has some of the best water in Canada, coming directly from the mountains. We drink tap water all the time, me about 4 litres or so a day, and it tastes just fine. Even here though we have folks buying bottled water, many by the case or ten at Costco. There is just no need, but.......

Hi: All... Elmvale Ontario has the "Purest water in the world". Located just off the shore of Georgian Bay the springs are tested weekly by scientists from the University of Toronto. Alf

An issue with people filtering their water is that they don't replace the filters often enough due to expense or laziness. Bacteria builds up and the result is water that is worse than what comes from the tap.

At least the municipality monitors water quality.

I don't see most home owners doing that to the degree necessary due to lack of expertise and the expense.

You are right on that Glenn . Always have extra filters on hand and they get marked . The shower ones are supposed to last 6 mo and am ready for replacement . The drinking water filters last 1 year and where there are see them everyday too and see the dates marked on them . Don’t worry , I do enough of that on my own . Pat

When I was a kid I drank city tap water and water from our garden hose both of which came into our home in lead underground pipes
Now I drink , cook , shower with water direct from our wells ( Shallow & Deep )
Bottled water is a luxury I neither need , want and is an environmental disaster IMHO
