Costa Rica

We are just boarding a flight back to the US after a week in the rainforest of the Osa Peninsula in southern Costa Rica. Although it represents less than a thousandth of the land mass in the world, it contains over 2.5 percent of its species. The most biologically intense place on the planet.

If you've never visited, consider it. Truly magical. We will be returning soon. Click image for larger version

Glad you had a good time there.
I wondered if you saw any snakes and were they big ones if you did? Do they have a problem there with invasive species?

We didn't see too many snakes Dave. But they do have some rather large Anacondas. The Osa Peninsula is blessed in that there aren't many invasive species. The Costa Rican government and people are very dedicated to preserving the area.

We spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica several years ago. It included US Thanksgiving Day. In a small town, we stopped for dinner at a local cafe and the proprietor fixed us a roast chicken dinner with stuffing and yams.

One of the locals told me that there were three requirements for establishing a city in Costa Rica; a bar, a church and a soccer field. Oh, and since 1949, the country has no standing military.

My wife was born in Costa Rica, so we go there every year to visit her family and take some vacation. The food, the people, and the scenery are always "pura vida".

Amazing pics, BTW. Where was 20220728_105119.jpg taken?

Same as what I’ve been told about rattlesnake. Though I’m not interested in roasting one or harming them. Now those sweet corn wrecking raccoons are another matter. So far so good.

If I never get on another airplane it will be too soon for me. Cherry tree, my old New Jersey back yard.

I've attached a map with the approximate location. We were trolling the beach on the pacific side of the Osa peninsula. I caught a 3 1/2 ft Reef Shark, a Rooster fish, and a couple of Bonitos there. All were catch and release. The shark was smallish, but it fought like the dickens.

We lived in Dos Brazos (on your map!) for a year (2006); right on the edge of Corcovado Park. Beautiful, rugged, primeval jungle. Still have friends there. Good memories!! Thanks for posting!

Did you make reservations of your own or do a package deal? Did you go through a travel agent? Did you stay in a hotel? I have always wanted to go to Costa Rica but stopped myself after the Hurricane hit it hard.

"Not bad when roasted properly"-- are we talking about snakes, or prime ministers?

Oh, wait.... same thing.

Hi Jack, hope all is well with you, Nancy and Murphy.
Thought of you tonight when these cumulus came up.

It was a company retreat. My boss flew everyone down, expenses paid. We stayed at a newly opened resort called the Botanika Osa, which was fantastic. I would imagine that to do that on our own, it would have run around 6500 for the wife and I including meals and airfare.

There are much much less expensive options. Costa Rica is a relatively modern country with warm and friendly people who often speak English and who will even accept US currency.

If you booked a bargain airfare in advance, and stayed at an AirBnB, I'd imagine you could do a week in Costa Rica, food lodging and airfare, for as little as $1200-$1500.
