They use standoffs. It basically centers the mesh.

Then You have a excellent contractor. Seen too many times when the contractor would pour the concrete n leave the mesh sitting on the ground. Too lazy to do it right.

We use rebar on slabs in heated garages too. Could be just that it is now common practice after seeing mesh failures quite a bit. Nothing beats proper prep of the ground beneath though.

Standoffs around here are when two parties in disagreement who refuse to budge on their position. We use chairs. Lets the reinforcing take a break for a while. While they work great for keeping the reinforcing at the proper height, they are a pain when you need to wheelbarrow the concrete across the pad to get to the area you are starting with.

I just got the grade for our drive and garage floor in our reno prepped for concrete. Need to do the drive as soon as the addition framing is done, or we will miss out on an opportunity this year. The garage can be done in the winter. The clock is ticking.......

Also known by the term "dobies". In So.Calif., rebar ("deformed reinforcing bar") is required due to earth movement; we're in earthquake country. It's typically #3 (3/8" ,or, 10mm) @ 24"o.c. e/w.

Yessir! But once I'm down the drive, I'll be unhooking and using my Parkit360 for the 90 degree turn on the approach for the rv garage.

We had enough space to make our camper's carport is a pull-through. Love it....

A correction: I thought they used some sort of risers or standoffs but they don't. I watched them pouring and forming one section. What they do is pour over the mesh, then wade into it and use a long hammer looking thing with a hook on the end of it. They go down and pull the mesh up into the center of the slab. Kind of what David described.

One other interesting side note - apparently the mix they use for the driveways and sidewalks is a little different than what they use on the slab. It has some sort of fiber additive that makes it more crack resistant and "plastic".

Guess you don't need to worry about shoveling it.

We had plenty of space to do a pull through as well, Dave. But once I saw the estimated cost for the additional driveway and the rear door on the garage, I decided I could live with the back in.

I've *seen* the mesh secured to risers, or sitting on blocks prior to a pour.

It snows maybe once every 5 to 7 years here Bob. Usually there's no accumulation and it quickly melts. I don't know of anyone around here who owns a snow shovel.

Snow shovels are handy for picking up leaves when you're raking the driveway. We use them like a giant dust pan. its never snowed here in the 20+ years i've lived at this address.... we did have a bit of sleet once or twice that left a brief accumulation of pellet ice on the ground, but not more than 1/4" and it was melted within an hour.

Robert: The new place is coming along real nice with beautiful views. Maybe I'll come to you to do the mini-split! I haven't spent much time in Texas.

I guarantee you that would warrant a big pile of real Texas BBQ and a cooler of beer Dave. [emoji23]

Thanks Greg. Yep, hopefully around the 16th to the 20th. Don't have a firm date yet.

We wanted the pool built during the house build so we wouldn't have to hear that hammering of the rock during excavation. But, couldn't get it done due to a number of delays, etc. Oh well, I guess we can endure the noise for a few days.
