As one who sounds like Gomer Pyle with a head cold, I don't have room to talk.

Hey, I could still understand you despite the drawl. Folks from down your way have suggested I have an accent, but I know that is not true.

Years ago I was standing at the rental car counter in Logan Airport in Boston. The woman behind the counter was trying to give me directions to Lowell. She had a strong Boston accent and we were mutually unintelligible. I was bewildered, she was amused, as would have been anyone standing nearby. You had to be there.

I was talking to a few guys from Pennsyltucky at a Rendezvous a few years ago. One of them got a whiff off his buddy who had not showered in a few days. He said “Dang, the stank done jumped on you!” Wasn’t that hard to figure out what he meant even if you couldn’t understand him.

I spent four summers going to school at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville .
After 4 years I still could not understand what the locals were saying and after reading your post I discovered I still can’t .
Coming from Northern Minnesota , I found the Canadian Language very easy to pickup and understand . It was like we all came from the same continent !!

Nope, we don't have drawls or twangs and we pronounce our vowels. We don't put ruffs on our houses either.

So, who says "wash" as in "wash up for supper", and who says "warsh".
(My dad said the former and my mom the latter, and we're all from Lycoming County, PA).

Where I grew up in Missouri, we called it "pop". Since I've moved to Tennessee and picked up some of the local lingo (and after being corrected by DW), I've learned that everything here is "coke" (oh, and SWEET tea)!

Back in the 1970s (I think) political cartoonist Jeff MacNelly had a cartoon set in the South that had a soft drink machine in the background. Labels on the machine included "CoCola" and "Sebmup".

On the other hand we Canadians understand that those Mericans speak American so we're not really surprised that some have, umm, different accents.

The real surprise for me is that in England, where they speak English like us , I often can't understand the person at all.

This forum is highly educational , at least for this backwoods boy .
I have learned several words that I never heard before Poutine and Yall
I understand poutine because my wife says I think with my stomach but Yall confuses me
It appears to be an abbreviation for something .?
