I suspect that the question "have you ever smoked marijuana" is held in reserve. If you are suspect for other reasons ( whatever that may be ) or if the border guard doesn't like your mustache, they can ask the question.

Probably right. When I was in law enforcement, and we were questioning someone, we would sometimes throw in a question whose answer we didn't care about, just to see if the person of interest would lie about it. Telling a lie about something minor can be one indication of deception in more serious matters.

Question I used to get is, "is it OK if your dog has a biscuit"?

I suspect in time this will be repealed, as legalization takes effect throughout North America.

Always be prepared, since idiots abound. Remember that LAX airport security guard who thought he had the right to fondle an American air passenger, and got called out when the guy said to him, "If you touch my junk I'll have you arrested!"

Have to respectfully disagree; the tax revenues are too enticing for cash-strapped states.

Here in Canada they expect tax revenues to rise dramatically as it is legalized. There is no way to tax it now, for the most part.

In going either direction across the borders, there seems to be a huge discrepancy in what questions are asked or what you are asked to open. Loren

Just have a grin like "a mule eatin' briers". They'll ask something related to your expression. Your answer: "Look what I'm towin!"

I think the Canadian side is very consistent. The American side? Never know what you'll get. They say that's on purpose to prevent "predictability" and create randomness in border security screening procedures. I say it's because some of them aren't as good at their jobs.

Border crossing
I still like the Canadian guard that let me know she could see we had just renewed our passports and suggested that we sign them before heading South.

It's interesting, when croissant Canada going to Alf's rally in Niagara Falls, they just wave you thru the gates, no stopping, no passports. Returning to US there are always lines. Seems like the Canadians are glad to see us and the US wish we would not return.....

I would venture to say that a large percentage of post WWII babies born in the USA regularly smoke weed or "tried" in when they were in high school or college. So therefore (forget that I am being political here), it seems to me that denying entry so that an individual has to apply and pay big bucks for a special entry permit is just another money grab ill conceived in Washington, D.C. Gotta renew your passport every 10 years. Last time I renewed it was $110. For what? Passports are not going to keep terrorists out. When I was younger living in NH, one could ride a snow machine across the unguarded border either way. It would be easy to sneak across the border if one wished to do so. Again, just another money grab whereby the government comes up with a somewhat bogus reason to confiscate as much money as it can from the citizenry.

In the mid nineties we went camping in Glacier National Park. We decided to cross the border to Waterton and while in Canada I wanted to go to a nearby town to buy some Zyrtec as I was having allergy problems and it was an OTC drug in Canada, prescription only in USA. (I worked for Pfizer so I knew that.)
In the morning my wife, 8 year old twin boys and I drove to the border and I told the Canada border guard we were going to the nearby town and then to Waterton. She wanted to know why we were going to the town and not just to the park. I said we wanted to buy some groceries and then go to the park. She reminded me that we could buy groceries at Waterton and didn't need to go to the town.
I went to Arizona State University and had lived in Tempe for 8 years so I then gently reminded her that during the winter half of the population of her country lived in my state so why was she so concerned about us visiting a town in Canada. Bad call, we waited almost an hour for another girl to come out and dig thru every nook and cranny of my Toyota Camry. She kept asking if I had a gun. The good thing was that she cleaned out all the junk under my seats and in the trunk and with two little boys there was a lot.
