locking mechanism for fifth wheel hitch?

Hello again

Another novice question. Do 5.0 owners use/recommend any type of locking mechanism for the fifth wheel hitch when parking it, detaching it from the tow vehicle and leaving it in place all day somewhere?

We used one on our 17 foot as fellow campers strongly recommended it and are curious if similar theft prevention devices are made for fifth wheels and if so which is the most effective.

Most of the locks for travel trailer hitches could be opened with a piece of plastic and a brief tutorial on the internet on how to break or open the lock

Yes: google search results for "5th wheel lock" and "andersen ultimate hitch lock"

I don't use one so offer no specific recommendation; add the word "reviews" to either above search term for a focus on those.

Ft Knox makes a lock for the Andersen hitch. Pricey, but feels stout. Haven’t installed it yet, but will report back if there are problems.

We use the Fort Knox lock with our 5.0 with Andersen hitch. Quite independent of that, we also use chains with our Andersen hitch. It is a requirement in some states and is a good safety measure. Safety chains on Andersen require bigger eye bolts.

To fit the Fort Knox lock over the Andersen coupler, the (bigger) eye bolts have to be aligned so that the wide part (and the eye) is parallel to the ground to fit through the lock. We had to have have them re-adjusted after the installation to make this happen. After that, it is easy to put the lock (though it is heavy).

If you are going to do it, I'd buy the lock and take it to the installer to make sure that it can fit over the coupler right from the start.
