Has anyone winter camped at Tumalo State Park, Oregon?
If anyone has winter camped at Tumalo, is it easy to get in and out, or is there anything like a bad hill on the way to get there if the roads are icy? Does the Escape handle well towing on snow?
It's pretty flat from Bend to Tumalo if you're going over Mt Hood and there's enough traffic to keep the road pretty clear. Next week or so the weather looks ok to go there. Haven't had our 21 on any deep snow, and we do have a 4WD. As I recall the route in from Salem is a lot of 2 lane with more hills and less shoulders to pull over on if needed.
We’ve winter camped at Tumalo State Park many times for Mt. Bachelor skiing. We drive down from Olympia through Mt. Hood, Warm Springs, Redmond, etc. The final mile to the park is downhill and curvy but always well maintained with plowing and sand/gravel. If your rig can make it to Bend, the final mile should be just fine.
I should mention that we are still camping in our A-Liner (Toyota RAV4 with 4WD) so probably lighter and more maneuverable than our dream Escape but still think you should not have any trouble as long as you’re not traveling in the middle of a major storm.
If you're staying at Tumalo be sure to zip up to Bachelor. Great area for x-country, some nice tracked trails, too. Also rental gear if need be.
That's the goal! We've always stayed at hotels in Bend before for our skiing trips. One of the things I imagined when we got the Escape was ski trips. I also dream of seeing snow outside its windows, if we get lucky. In the daytime we like Virginia Meissner and also the actual Bachelor Nordic area. So I think in the new year we'll take the plunge with the Escape at Tumalo.
