My New Escape 17

After a 3000 mile trip across the US I picked up my Escape 17B at Chilliwack. I took a number of photos of both Escape's new plant, and, of course, my trailer. They are available at my LakeshoreImages blog at http://www.lakeshoreimages.com/2011trip009.html. I did get the front storage box, so I included a bunch of photos of it for those considering it. It is a tight fit with dual propane tanks & a power jack, but it works.

Congrats, and thanks for the photos. I am considering upgrading to the front storage box too. You need to remove the "." at the end of the address string to get the page to open though.

Re: My New Escape 17

Jon,

Your photos and the accompanying itinerary descriptions are great. We tried desperately to enhance your photos to see whether one of the Escapes in progress was ours. But, we couldn't get the resolution any higher without top-secret photo enhancement software. Bummer! We take delivery at the end of June. Ours also has the dual batteries and solar panels.

If you come back through Montana, take a stop in Missoula to see us.

Wow!
Congratulations. What a beauty! Thank you for the pictures, too. Is that a back up camera above the rear window? If so, is it wireless?
I know you will thoroughly enjoy your trip. (Nice t.v. too.)

Re: My New Escape 17

You will find out how handy the front box is. I really enjoy having one for my 19ft Escape. It is a place to put all those trailer things. Your unit is nice looking and thank you for taking pictures of the factory.

Re: My New Escape 17

The back up camera is wired. Reace did a great job on the installation.

I purchased a 2 camera system from http://www.rearviewsafety.com/index.php/ with a 5" monitor & trailer kit (includes connectors for hooking & unhooking). Not inexpensive, but since I travel alone both cameras help. It also provides a beautiful rear view mirror!

Re: My New Escape 17

Hi Verm:

Love your Escape and TV. Our 17B, due in 2 months, will look remarkably similar to yours. We are also looking at the RAV4 as a fuel efficient TV for planned X-continent trips.

Question: With the box, dual propane, and jack can you open the tail gate of the RAV?

Nice blog as well!

Re: My New Escape 17

With the WD Hitch and the trailer hooked up, I can open the rear door on the RAV about 6-8 inches. Just enough to reach in and grab something, but not enough to get it out the door. When the trailer is not attached, the door clears the WD Hitch by about 1/4 of an inch and opens fully.

I just use the rear passenger doors to access the back since the seats are usually folded to increase cargo area.

Re: My New Escape 17

Note that I don't have the front cargo box. It's the hitch on the trailer that gets in the way. Box and propane tanks aren't the issue.

Hi Jon,
Thanks for your pictures and blog! We just bought our Rav4 and plan to order the 17B for next June. I retire in January. We're not too far from you: Peterborough, Ontario. Looking at your pics may inspire me to get a "real" camera. All the best wishes for your travels,
Arthur and Linda

Re: My New Escape 17

You might as well plan on diving over the back seat to get to anything in the rear of the RAV4 since you really can't open the door enough to get at anything. You really don't want to have to get anything out of the under deck storage - don't ask how I know!

As to mileage, I averaged 24.5 coming across the country (Without the trailer). So far, towing on secondary roads for about 285 miles, the average is at 13.5. I'd probably do better with a truck, but I love the RAV4.

Hi Vermilye

Really like your posts and pictures.
We have a 19 and with our Toyota Tacoma got about 16 imperial mpg (13.5 us).
Have a good trip and enjoy your Escape.

Re: My New Escape 17

Thanks for the camera info. I thought I observed just one on your new Escape. Is the second one for backing up?
Thanks,
Sandra

Re: My New Escape 17

The one on the RAV 4 is useful for hitching as well as serving as a standard back up camera. Although you can order one from the factory for the RAV, I wouldn't have been able to also tie the trailer camera to the stock monitor. With the Rear View Safety system I can switch between the two cameras as well as an additional video input. I really like the camera on the trailer for backing & as a replacement for a rear view mirror...

Re: My New Escape 17

Thanks again for the information. Great pictures on our blog too. You picked a good time to come to the west.
California State Highway 1, while not the best, is a scenic way to see the coast. There is info and cams re: traffic at this site: http://www.dot.ca.gov/ Personally, I like Oregon's better: http://www.tripcheck.com/Pages/CamerasEntry.asp
Enjoy!
