Model 15a Escape
My wife and I are desperately looking for an Escape 15a for sale. I know how hard these are to come by, so we decided to throw it out there and see if there's any replies. We currently live in Canmore, Alberta, but are homeless as of Aug 1st, so we'll be camping until we can find what we're looking for. We're also traveling Westbound and would be willing to drive basically anywhere to pick one up. Thanks for hosting this forum, it's AMAZING. I'll be checking it daily. Best wishes to all and happy traveling.

Not a 15 footer, but I saw a 17A for sale in Victoria on Craigslist. It was posted about 3 weeks ago, so not sure if it's still available ? Good luck - we've been searching for a good 17B for some time now.

Thank you, I didn't think to try Craigslist as well, I will. Good luck on your search also. Unfortunately, we can't pull a 17. What about that fellow in Prince Gorge with the 17B? Did he find a buyer already?
Cheers.

What is your tow vehicle?
I ask because the specs list 190 lbs. dry hitch weight for the 15 and 250 for the 17. My 17 hitch weight is actually 320 once you fill the dual propane tanks.
"Dry weights" are before such things as batteries, propane, water etc. are added.

I was also wondering because almost any tow vehicle that can tow a loaded 15 would be able to tow a 17 because they are so close in weight and you will need a 3,500 pound capacity. Also the tongue weight on our 15 is 350 which also requires a 3,500 pound tow capacity. All of the trailers end up heavier than listed dry weights.

Our 17B fully loaded weighs approx. 3150 lbs. - Tongue weight we try to keep between 330 & 340.

And, as some have rightly pointed out to me here, don't get a trailer to match your TV, get a TV to match your trailer. TV's come and go -- but hopefully, the trailer does not.

On the other hand, committing to a lifetime of owning and operating an excessively large and expensive tug because you chose the wrong trailer doesn't seem like a good idea to me. Like many things in life, trailer and tug choice involves compromise.
Choosing the combination to suit yourself makes the most sense to me. For most people, that combination will change over the decades as personal circumstances change.

Since we're offering advice about trailer and tug selection (although it was not asked for)...

Almost, but not all - Subaru for instance is well known for having quite restricted hitch weight limits compared to the total trailer weight allowed; perhaps hitch weight is the limitation, and the 17 will have a higher hitch weight for the same option and cargo loading. Techfan's caution is still applicable here: although listed at 190 lb dry, the actual hitch weight of any 15' will be higher when loaded and will likely exceed a 200 lb tongue weight limit.
There is no need for 3,500 pounds of towing capacity just because the trailer has a 3500 lb axle. The tug does need to be able to pull the loaded (yes, much more than base/dry/empty) trailer plus carry passenger and cargo loads. There is no need for that trailer weight to include 1900 pounds of options and stuff (that's what it would take to make a 15A weigh 3500 pounds), nor is there a need to have a tug sized to tow weight that isn't being towed.
A 15A weighs 300 pounds less than a 17A, because it has a smaller body and shorter frame. Perhaps it would cause less confusion if ETI set the GVWR for the 15' at 3200 pounds, allowing the same cargo as a 17'.

It always amuses me when an OP posts a query and then others try to talk them into something else despite the fact that, in most cases, people have put a lot of thought into their decisions.
I love my 15A and wouldn't trade it for anything...not a bigger trailer, not one with a bathroom or AC or underbody insulation or any other option I didn't choose.

"Unfortunately, we can't pull a 17."
This is the sentence that raised red flags, causing members to ask about the tow, since it appears there is no margin.

We have a Dodge Grand Caravan, I believe the towing capacity is 2500lbs on those, and we'll be getting a cooler installed. So, we're really looking for 13' and 15' but I didn't realize the 17' was only a few hundred pounds heavier. However, I think that might add up and be harder on the vehicle overall. So, we'll continue searching for the smaller models. Thanks.

Yep, when it comes to ANY brand of all molded towable... you snooze, you lose.
Remember, things happen for a reason and PAY ATTENTION. Within your (comfortable) driving distance.... trailers may go fast.
It really is location, location, location (kinda like a sticks 'n bricks)
Best of luck!

Karen, what do you use to tow your 15A? I am looking for drop-dead basic camper and a used tug. First timer, so any advice welcome.

I'm afraid I'm no help here! I tow with a Ford 150 XLT which would have pulled anything. I was not limited by my tug...just my desire to have the smallest and simplest Escape possible that would fit my minimalist needs.
