Given my broad technological background, and experience in trouble shooting, I would have to say the adaptor in question is definitely broken.

Thanks. One less thing to eliminate.

Seriously though, I hesitate to try and plug anything else into that socket until I eliminate the socket as the cause. Perhaps swap it out with another 12V socket before trying to plug in something?

Insert in cigarette plug with leads and test. As long as you have a proper sized fuse in place, blowing it is a cheap check. It would prove whether the socket is faulty or not.

I doubt it is society. More likely it is social media.

You musta just about been sitting waiting for me to post, as I saw it and corrected it almost right away (I was distracted by my daughter's Facebook post), and never saw your post until afterwards.

Though, I did go back again and fix another wee boo boo.

if you have a DVM, set it for DC Volts, stick the + probe in so it hits the 'button' un the middle of the bottom of the jack, and touch the - probe to the metal ring around the side, you should see your battery (or converter) voltage.

if you see 120VAC (when the trailer is plugged in) then something is wired insanely wrong. but that wouldn't have blown a DC fuse, it would have popped an AC breaker.

Pretty hard to mix up AC with DC, but I guess stranger things have happened. I do have a voltmeter but not with me. I'll hold off any further troubleshooting till I can check the voltage.

My guess - and only a educated guess - is that inserting the adapter which pressed on the positive contact at the bottom of the socket moved the terminals of the socket enough to short them together, or short the positive terminal to some other grounded part. Of course no socket should do that, but these lighter/accessory sockets are frequently of extremely low quality.

Yep, I thought it might be a short, but Scosche adapters are super high quality. Nothing like the ones in the bucket at the convenience store. I take it you mean the socket is low quality? Now that I can believe.

Robert,

Did you find the Scosche adapters locally (e.g. at a Walmart) or did you have to order them online? I looked at a Target today and didn't see any. I need a couple.

I've never found them in stores Mike, but that's not to say they aren't around. I get them on Amazon, but the particular model isn't available there right now. You can get them directly from Scosche however. Not cheap but they work great - that is of course, unless your RV socket melts them.

Yes, that's what I meant: the terminals of the socket shorting, not any part of the adapter. If it's the socket, it would have happened with anything plugged into it.

Probably. Most of the better ones are built similarly. But, the Monoprice has a 1 yr warranty and the Scosche has 3, if that means anything.

if the socket terminals had shorted, THOSE wires would have burned, not the plug in the socket.

I've just decided, I'm going to add a marine/rv dual socket, one cigarette socket, and one dual 2.1amp USB, hard wired to 2 new 15A fuses on my E21, putting it under the seat at the very back of the U dinette, right next to the power center, so we can charge stuff on the dinette table.

any hints on how to cut clean 1-1/8" holes in that paper thin ply? I'll make a backing plate, and probably use nylock nuts and blackened panhead screws.

You can score the hole 1st with a razor blade, then cut just inside the score.

I've also used tape, more for it's ability to show pencil lines, but it limits breakage too. It also keeps the jig saw surface from doing any damage.
