I haven't had any problems running my AC with my Ryobi 2200 Generator, but if a soft start will reduce the "thunking" I think It's worth adding.

Soft start

I got the model number from escape trailers for the Dometic AC unit. I reached out to them directly to find out what soft start (actually called a hard start) is used with this unit. They told me that this particular unit that we are getting ( April 2021 21C) Comes with a hard start already installed.

Here is their response...straight from my email

Thank you for contacting Dometic,

For one unit recommend 3.5 Kw generator, the soft start is used on Marine products not RV side. The hard start will assist with the start up by absorbing the load on start up. All ac
the units will come with the hard start capacitor installed already. I attached the manual for the unit. Hope this information help.

I think some confusion keeps perpetuating. See post #16. A "hard start" capacitor that comes standard on a Dometic A/C is not the same as the MicroAir Easy Start that some users have added aftermarket. If you are trying to run on 2000W generator (especially at any altitude) the Easy Start has been worthwhile for some folks to add. As I indicated in post #3 it appears that Coleman has soft start technology on the new 13,500 BTU NDQ model that Escape is offering as an option can be added for a small fee based on earlier posts. Not sure how it compares to the MicroAir.

So here is the last eat information from Dometic on a easy start.

Hello,

We do not recommend installing an easy start on our units as this has not been tested. If an easy start is installed and the unit fails it will not be covered under warranty

That's just CYA speak. Many have been installed on Dometic A/C's and I haven't heard of any issues. If anything it should help with the longevity of the machine with easier starts on the compressor.

Not only that, they are putting out false info. The unit would not be covered in the event of failure only if it were the easy start that caused the failure. They'd have to somehow prove that, which isn't going to happen.

What is far more likely to happen is this: right after the warranty expires, all the refrigerant will leak out of the unit. And then you'll find to your chagrin that it's not rechargeable. Don't ask me how I know.
