I put together a permanent bed. The first layer is a 2" folding gym mat which makes access to the storage bins easier than if it was covered with a heavy mattress. The next layer is a sloped mattress (6" at the head, 2" at the foot) to help deal with my acid reflux. On top of that is a 2" memory foam mattress pad. I sewed a zippered cover that holds both the pad & sloped mattress, which makes it fairly easy to lift either end to get to the storage. Photos on my modifications page.

Thanks for all these options.
We just did a little Amazon shopping and are wondering what the peanut gallery thinks of these two options:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00W67PCTE Milliard 4 inch memory foam tri fold
Amazon.com - Milliard 6-Inch Memory Foam Tri-fold Mattress with Ultra Soft Removable Cover with Non-Slip Bottom - Queen -
We like these because they fold up and would presumably give us the option of taking the mattress out if we wanted to set up our Escape for Happy Hour when it's sitting around in our gardens. Either way we'd have to cut them (doesn't seem like a big deal) -- and if there were no other considerations we both would go 6" BUT we are a little concerned about weight and bulk getting the larger one out the door. What think y'all? 4" enough to improve signifcantly over the escape cushions if we leave them at home? Or should we get the 4 and use it OVER the escape cushions (which may make our sinkside table a little unhappy)?

E - our high density 2" over the cushions does well. Even with that we have to move it to operate the sink table.

Eric, so you actually have to physically pull it back/aside?

Yes - a bit to get the table up and down, but we're used to it. The ABCs of Getting Some Zs - WSJ Good article about foam toppers

I personally don't care for memory foam so I ordered a regular bed mattress from Escape for the rear dinette.

Here's a crappy pic of my 2" topper on cushions, with kitchen extension raised ( we never lower it ). I sleep with my feet under the extension.
As you can see, there's not a lot of room for a thicker topper. Storage when not in use would also be an issue.
I think you either have to commit to a proper mattress, with no cushions, or just use a thinner topper, with cushions.

Just got this email from ebay. "Just for today" they say. Comes in all sizes. Not sure if this is a good deal of not but thought I'd pass along.

They do come in twins and doubles but I have no idea if those are close in size to what's in the Escapes.

That darn ebay - they changed the page already. BUT, I scrolled down and found it under "Best of Home and Garden."

We find using 1.5" memory foam under 1.5" open cell foam to be comfy. All you have to do to put the table extension up or down is peel the toppers back a foot. We trimmed about 2" off the toppers to accomodate the table extension in the down position. Don't miss it.
If I had to do it all again, I would approach Escape about building the cushions 5" thick in the first place with softer, less dense foam an not have to bother with toppers at all.

Albeit a bit tardy, here are the promised photos.
