BBQ
Thanks for all the great ideas and suggestions!
The briquette BBQ is also a "must-have" in my camping gear

BBQ
I have a buddy with a Cobb Grill. It works great for most things. It uses very little charcoal and produces very tender meats. The only thing is, and this is true of many BBQ's, is that it doesn't sear very well, something imperative to producing a great steak. LINKY

BBQ
I have almost a dozen BBQ cookbooks and how-to and bibles with umpteen chapters on charcoal versus gas.
I use gas because it is convenient and consistent.
And I have to ask, because charcoal is used in water filters and the like, because it adds no flavour to the filtered liquid, does it really add flavour in BBQ?
You can argue that you don't burn the charcoal for filtered water, but all I know is that nobody has come up with real proof that charcoal is better than gas or that gas is better than charcoal.
In my experience, flavour comes from fat, so a good marbled steak, cooked properly on a BBQ, gas or coals is going to taste great, especially in the great outdoors.

Re: BBQ
The flavour from charcoal comes from the drippings searing on the hot coals and imparting flavour from that smoke onto the meat. There are a couple gas grills that get hot enough to do this, but not many. It is easier to at wood chips for a smoke flavour to coals then a gas grill, though some gas grills can use a smoke box.
That said, I use gas for many reasons, it is faster to get cooking on, more convenient to use, and no ashes to dispose of.
If one really wants a good smoke flavour it is hard to duplicate the taste from a real smoker. That said, mine is electric but does burn real wood to impart the smoke flavour. Again, it is the ease of use, and the food still tastes great.

Re: BBQ
I got 1.4 kg. of pork side ribs for $8.31 at Safeway last Saturday. Then I went to my bbq store and paid $6.99 for .8 kg of hickory chips.
This is nuts.

Re: BBQ
We had a Cobb grill, used it for one season, then sold it on ebay. Foods just didn't taste grilled, probably because the fats didn't drip onto the coals. Nice device, stayed cool to the touch and you can move it even when its red-hot on the inside...just didn't want to carry one-more-thing.

Re: BBQ
Dave, that is pretty much the finding of my buddy too. It was much better at doing fish, chicken or small roasts, as it seems to 'bake' very well, but the grilling was less impressive.
